I want to add a rail system to my M4gery but I don't want to spend a ton of dough or send it to a gunsmith. What type of options are there that just replace the handguards with rails. I don't need to mount optics on it, just maybe a VFG and a light, maybe a bipod sometimes.

The YHM are your most affordable 2 piece aluminum drop in rails.  The MI 2 piece are a little more money, but machined nicer IMHO.

You were quicker than me, Stick..

+1 for the MI rails goe 'em and like 'em.

Keep in mind that the low end rails are not MIL-Spec.  They work most of the time.

I could mount lights and optics to mine even and level, but could not wedge a TangoDown forward verticle grip.  But great for the price IMHO.

I have the MI 2 pc rail and love it.  Much better quality than the YHM.

I just got the MI rails for my 20".  They are solid.  I got them from Bravo Company USA.

You really shouldn't mount optics to an NON-FF forend.  However, if all you're worried about is CQB and/or keeping it on a pie plate to 50y or so; then a red-dot on a KAC, MI, or YHM would work well enough.

What is the most inexpensive but nice FF that I could mount a Eotech on my A2 shorty?  I saw a set of YHM ones for under 100 but do they require removal of the barrel?

Troy MFR-C at $210.  But you'll need to dremel off the Delta ring & associated hardware if you don't want to remove the barrel.
