Would an 11.5” 4140 Chrome-moly steel w/ 5 1/2" Flash Hider barrel be as accurate as a regular 16 inch or no?

Maybe (at least at closer ranges), but that's gotta be one of the stupidest configurations ever designed. You lose reliability and a tremendous amount of velocity, and FOR WHAT? The barrel length has to be at least 16" total anyways. Might as well squeeze out acouple hundred more FPS.

I agree with the Colonel of Chicken here. Aside from teh look, you'd be better off just going with a 16" barrel. 16" M4 or Government profiled barrels are still nice and light and give a substantial velocity increase. If you're going to get a 10.5"-11.5" barrel, SBR it.

supposidly bbl length has no bearing on accuracy....

i'd go w/ mr stickman and colsanders w/ a +1 for the longer bbl length for more vel

ok, i was just wondering cuz it looks cool.

How does a longer barrel increase velocity. Ive heard many people say it but i am wodering how that works.

The bullet is in the bore longer, and the gas is accelerating it for a longer time.

Until it reaches a point where the pressure behind the bullet is overcome by the friction of the barrel, which in .223 is somewhere around 26", IIRC.

That being said, a match quality 10" barrel will be more accurate than a rack quality 20" barrel.  The quality of the barrel and ammo will have more impact on accuracy (as long as the bullet is supersonic and stabilized) than length.  Length = velocity.

Like stickman says, the 11.5x5.5 barrels work.

However, why buy something that is an long as a 16" barrel with a birdcage, but performs like a much shorter barrel? Either Form 1 the rifle and use an 11.5" barrel or get a 16" barrel, or is you want a Title 1 weapon with the look of the XM177 call Bushmaster and buy their flash suppressor--the one that looks like the moderator but threads onto the end of a 16" barrel and covers the barrel.

If you just like the look, you can find flash hiders that telescope back over the barrel to give it the same look without losing the advantages of the longer barrel.
