If you go with a carbon setup, and a DD rail, you would have yourself a very light AR-15. If she can't handle that...then I give up.

I would tell her to work out. A plain jane AR is pretty damn light.

An SP1/XM177-type carbine with pencil barrel is very light. A few companies are making light weight carbines now. Bushmaster is the only one I can think of now, but I know there are others...

Grab a lightweight barrel in 16", A1 or A2 upper. You should be able to target 6 pounds or so.

My girl is petite, 5’3” 100lbs, and she can handle my standard A2 AR-15 just fine. It has a light profile 14.5" barrel with phantom flash hider. She does like it to have the 9mm buffer though since it helps lessen the recoil. The collapsible stock is a plus also since I can shorten it for her. A 16” pencil barrel would be a little bit lighter also.

6lbs seems reasonable although I suspect you could make one lighter if you tried real hard.

14.5in lightweight bbl w/ perm phantom, A1 upper, standard newer bushy HGs (w/ black heatshields), CAR stock, aluminum lower
or, CAV arms polymer lower w/ lightweight bbl i would also say the A3 upper w/ a set of BUIS |

if you went with a carbon fiber upper or regular upper and cav arms lower and a pencil barrel and light weight forearm you'd be at about 5lbs, my son is 11 yoa and he shoots my ar with ease it's a 16 middy gov profile and a vltor stock and BUIS

I have a Bushmaster "Superlight" 16" barrel on an early M16 upper (no forward assist) with a collapsible stock. It weighs 5 1/2 pounds.

I +1 that. My sister is 5' 1" size 0-2 and her favorite gun is the M249. If she can carry one of those, than I bet your girlfriend can carry an AR. |

You can get it between 5 and 6 pounds. Thats light. Just use lightweight parts like the lightweight barrel, a flat top with a flip up sight, or an A1 upper with no brass deflector or for. assist, use the older style 4 position stock etc. Saving an ounce or two in several different areas will ad up to make a very light rifle.

I'm a small guy and I just grab my rifle by the handguards one-handed occasionally. Feels like my damn airsoft gun. Plain ARs are only about 6 lbs.. |

Figure out whether she will want an optic down the road, the go from there. While an A1 upper is nice, you can always go with a flattop upper, and use a BUIS as the primary rear sight. That way you can use an optic down the road. If she hates optics, let her try one out so she can see what it does.

If you can, let her try shooting some light rifles first. Some people don't like the recoil in lighter weight guns. It's easier to hold on target, but the recoil is sharper, similar to the feel of 9mm vs .45acp.

I would guess a cav arms lower, a lightwieght or super light barrel, and what ever upper suits your needs. That would be a very light rifle.

Something else to think about is that many smaller shooters like a carbine stock due to it being easy to adjust to their smaller build. Solid stocks tend to often make things more difficult for some.

Working on this as we speak. Got a plain jane DPMS 4 position lower at home and a DPMS lightweight (pencil barrel) A3 upper en route. Plan to install a DPMS BUIS and prob nothing else for now. Its for my wife. She shot my RRA the other day, but is got alot of gucci-AR stuff (Rails, vert grip, Surefire light, Vltor stock, magpul this/that..blah, blah, blah) and she complained about the weight abit. I will be perm installing prob YHM flashhider to legal 16" length overall, so as to minimize size and weight. Once done, I'll post results and some pix. |

she has shot my A2 and liked it but now I have rails and vert grip and blah blah ect. now it is too heavy for her. She liked it the way it was before but it was still a little heavy for it here is a pic of the way it was. A2 with m4 heavy barrel and car handgaurds.

What about getting a Bushy carbon fiber rifle then cut the barrel to 11.5 with a pinned flash hider? IIRC, the barrel is already a pencil, but couldn't you put one in if it isn't? How light could that be, with the carbon fiber and the 11.5 pencil+FH?
I think a great goal would be to make an AR at or under 3lbs. Talk about lightfighter. |

I dont want to use carbon fiber But I like the idea of cutting the 16 inch pencil barrel to 11.5 and pinning the flash hider. I just dont know if it would work well. I will put that idea at the top of the list. |

Remember the lighter you make it, the more the perceived recoil.
That said, make her a mid lengthed Flat top with an Eotech and Ace skeleton stock. That's a pretty balanced setup with a verticle grip. |
