I'm not sure when or where I got it from, but I have decided to go with an A1 upper for my next build. I just like the simplicity of them.

What's the difference?

I've been wondering the same thing.

I picked an A1 for my upper for three reasons:

1)  I really like iron sights, and don't want to spend $500 on optics
2)  I like the whole historical retro look
3)  This board, and local ranges, are packed with tricked-out M4geries, and I don't have the cash to top that.

So I ended up with an A1 16" Dissipator, and it's wicked cool.

Not sure if age is any factor;  I'm 25.

but a lot of other people have figured out that its hard to mess up an A1 rear sight once you are dialed in.

The set and forget sites are what I've heard touted for as long as I've been here.
I don't think anything new is going on. But I see a lot of dealers have them. Maybe they've been dumped on the market from some where?

Maybe older but every bit as fun,the sp1 gets a lot of looks at the range too!

A1 Rear sight kicks ass.  Really people, when TSHTF are you going to suddenly find youself in a firefight and then are you going to crouch behind a tree and dial up you rear sight to 800 yards.  I don't think so.  KISS!

Heh I'll trade my A1 upper for a flat top. My eyes are at the point where I need a scope for the shooting I do.

Just PM me

With the exception of NRA HiPower shooters, who actually adjusts their A2 sights? Once I get it sighted in, it stays sighted in. So why not get A1 sights? I have seen the results of an A2 sight nob rubbing against a shooters chest for five straight days--just five days!--and he had serious zero issues that were exposed at the 300m line.

I love my A1. Accurate as heck, light, awesome-looking, and I always get alot of "Is that one of those M16s from Vietnam?" at the range.

It's not just the used M16A1 uppers that the surplus folks are carrying!

Quite a few manufacturers have new-production A1 uppers:  CMMG, Bushmaster, DPMS, etc.

(takes out crystal ball)  In the near future, almost all ARs will be either flattop or A1, except for the very small market catering to the Gulf War/Somalia War Retro crowd.

I packed an M16A1 most of my career thus far.  We only got our A2's a few years ago and that is what I am packing here in Iraq, but I kinda want my A1 back.  I have an Eotech on a PRI mount and it would be just fine on an A1.

I sold my ARs during a nasty divorce and plan on rebuilding when I get back from Iraq.

I'd like to have an A1 or XM177 clone.  I had an SP1 carbine and let her go.

I have an SP1 CAR and an AF 604 upper with a chrome slick side bolt carrier on a RRA lower.  I also have a 6.8 flattop upper.  I am thinking of a slabside or A1 20" pencil bbl 6.8 !  I think it would be pretty damn neat !  Triangle handguards and all !  I have a 20" A1 pencil bbl 5.56 I could cannibalize,,, nah, just build a whole 'nother upper

Meaning "slickside" or meaning "with the forward assist but without the deflector"?

C7 is the best of both worlds to this left handed shooter.  I like the simplicity of A1 and the brass deflector.

Yeah, I've got the obligatory A1 retro gun in my collection. Light, accurate, and simple. It's also nostalgic: it's what I carried for my 4 years in the Army and 3 in the Guard. Never had an A2 or M4 issued to me (only purchased by me!).

And 55gr out of a 20" barrel is nothing to sneeze at if you're on the receiving end!

Forward assist, no deflector.
There are a couple folks who sell slicksides.

A slick side upper for me, please.  I have two, and love them.  Super light, with pencil barrels.  I just wish I could find an A1 (pencil) profile barrel with a 1:7 twist.
