I am looking to build the ultimate AR.  I want a 16" fluted non-chrome lined Chromoly barrel but am having trouble locating one.  However, during my search I have come across all sorts of cool crap that I want to put on this build.  It got me thinking about other's opinions on the ultimate AR setup.  What's yours?

If by "perfect AR", you mean one that is a good all-around rifle for most things an average joe is likely to run into, I'd say one like my ADCO-built middy would be good for you.  I picked this configuration to be a multi-purpose rifle after owning several different configurations in the past.  I wanted a rifle that was capable of ranges from 20' to 500yds.

I don't have any pics of the completed rifle yet, but here's the specs:

CMMG 16" .gov profile midlength bbl, 1/7, chrome lined
WOA flat-top upper
RRA lower
MagPul M93B
MagPul MIAD
LaRue 12.0
Troy BUIS (front and rear)
Leupold MR/T M2 with Ill. SPR reticle
LaRue SPR-EER mount
Pentagon X3 in a DD mount (will be a LaRue offset mount when I get around to ordering one)
Dieter CQD vert. grip
Harris bipod with LaRue mount so I can detach it when it's not needed.
Vortex

The furniture is OD and the entire rifle was KG Koted OD by ADCO.  Green matches my environment.

Over time if you look at these threads you will see countless variations of AR's.  They will give you ideas you would not have thought of before.  Still, you need to assess what the gun's primary function will be and build on that.

I guess if I had to say "if you could have only one" rifle, mine would be:

16" middy with rifle length handguards, set up as a dissy
1:9 twist, chrome lined medium profiled barrel
standard FSB
A1 upper receiver with A2 sight
shortened fixed stock (for the cleaning kit)

IMO of course YMMV

that said my most used gun is a BM mod carbine with a surefire 900, magpul M93B  stock,   and a  Trijicon TAO1NSN

My perfect AR would have a hole for the sear pin drilled in the lower. After that I could be happy with anything.

A 20" AR with a scope and a Dr optic type at the same time.

Preferaly that can do 1k yards too, maybe in 6.5

We will see soon.

For medium range accuracy, my idea on a no budget weapon....

LMT lower with LMT 2-Stage Trigger
WOA Upper
Douglas 12 flute SDM spec' barrel
PRI SS Gas Block
Smith Ent. Vortex
Daniel Defense 12.0 forearm w/ AMU spec' steel barrel nut
KNS pins
CMT CL/MP tested M16 BCG
PRI M84 Gasbuster Changing Handle
Troy F/R BUIS
ARMS 30mm high rings
Leupold Mk 4 3-9x36mm MR/T M3 with Illuminated Reticle.

The pics were taken in January, I have added a Magpul trigger guard and PRS stock, a Harris 3-9 BRM/S bipod with nut locker and LaRue bipod apapter, and finished it with a KAS QD sling mount and a turner AWS sling. All the parts came from ARFCOM dealers, NW Tactical, G&R Tactical, and ADCO Firearms....

My short range tool would be an LMT as well...

One lower multiple uppers.

That's the perfect AR15.

Then you could have something like a big bore chambered AR15 as a guide gun for the occasional charging grizzly(or more realistically empty beer keg), another upper to get it moved over to a varmint config, another upper for 3gun or defensive use.

So my perfect lower would wind up being something like a Bushmaster or STAG lower with Magpul M93A, Magpul MAID grip and triggerguard, and a massaged trigger with a JP speed hammer.

Upper would be anybody's definition of perfect for them.

Honestly, my ultimate rifle would be either a debaned MT6400C or an LE6920, with a high quality optic (ACOG, Aimpoint, eotech etc). I've never been a fan of the super fancy stuff. I'd rather keep it realitvely simple. Every answer you get will be different.  Everyone has their own wants/needs, and none are going to be the same. I would recomend surfing through the pic threads to see what you might be interested in.

I was going to say the same thing - that AR really cannot be trumped !!!

But here's a pic of my all-round AR - 16" Midlength (CMMG lower, RRA upper) with ELCAN optic and diemaco BUIS.

(I've tweaked it a little since then - it's got a fully railed handguard now, plus a different stock)

I haven't caught an SPR disease yet, I'm waiting to see if my 2 STAG lowers will get to be built up into full rifles(california resident) to join my 3 other AR15s plus AR10.

If one of the STAGs gets to be built up, that's pretty damn close to what I'm lookin to build.

Something to be a smaller brother to my AR10.

I would only change a couple of things, otherwise it's perfect for me

1. it would be a Colt 6921 instead of an LMT
2. upgrade to the new Surefire with the LEDs
3. upgrade from the Aimpoint ML2 to an ML3
4. add a D-Fender

G6A2 FH (On its way)
RRA lower
RRA 2 stage trigger (I'd love a KAC or a Gieselle)
MIAD and the Magpul TG

Looks heavy.

For me, the perfect AR would be something like this

M4A3 (RR)
EOtech/ACOG
Troy rear BUIS
A good surefire light.
Ability to mount a suppressor

I don't see the need for much else.
No rails, VFGs etc.
