which of these barrel nuts is the "new" one. the one that is in current use?
been searching to find this out but even DD has both pics on their site

Nieter one is the barrel nut. The barrel nut cannot be seen from the outside.  What you are talking about is a retaining collar that holds the tube on the barrel nut.  They changed it so you could use a spaner wrench to tighten it.


Mine are all the old style and I had to use a strap wrench to get them tight.  One that uses a spaner would be better in my opinion.

When you hear people talk about alluminim vs steel barrel nuts they are talking about the unseen nut that holds the barrel on the upper.  Daniel Defense makes both an alluminum and a steel barrel nut.  The steel on is optional.

I didn't know there was a new style.
The older one looks better, but I can see where the new one would perform better/install easier.

I got this upper from Jay at DD around the first of Jan. maybe it's the new style.
