As promised, for all you Intermediate Cartridge Lovers (ICLs), here's the latest 6.5 Grendel news from SHOT 2006. For more complete news, please check www.65grendel.com/forum/.
Wolf is planning two loadings in 6.5 Grendel: a 120-grain tactical OTM and a 123-grain hunting Soft Point. Due in June 2006. High-capacity magazines hold 26 rounds, but will be advertised as 24-round, based on the 28 rounds of 5.56 in a 30-round mag principle. Mag bodies are stainless spring steel, black teflon coated, with non-tilt followers and chrome silica springs. Note the side ribs, which previous 6.5 Grendel mags lacked, but which are made possible by the change to steel. The next two photos show 6.5 Grendel versions by Sabre Defense. Somebody in another thread was asking for more SHOT Show news. Here is some, and I'll post more as I receive it. John |

any word on availabilty of parts for us home builders?
Thanks for the update! |
Friggin sweet
I'm looking to get a 16"er or an 18"er, gonna need some of those 26rd mags too |
This is just the excuse I need to Buy an AR.
Any possibility of 6.5 in AKs????????? Please! Also how about a Wolf .50 Beowulf? |
Any possibility of this ever catching on as a militery caliber?
Does it have more recoil then 7.62? If it has less I think it'd be a better choice then 5.56. |
I wouldn't count on any new calibers being adopted by anything other than small specialized units who get to play with new toys.
Much MUCH less recoil than .308 Win. |
1/2 the recoil of .308 |
DPMS has announced they will be offering the Grendel as well.
Another big MFG will announce either tomorrow or Sat, stay tuned... |
Does this mean the 6.5Grendel is the 'winner' over the 6.8SPC? |
The winner here is the consumer!!! We now have a greater volume of choices than ever before. Pick your 6.X and let the folks that pick the other live in peace. IMO, it is just good that the big boys are catching on to the "alternative" caliber thing, and that affordable ammo is now coming to fruition. |
Hell, with ammo at that price, I just might think about getting one
WIZZO |
I agree. I just wonder; considering the "winner" will have the greater ammo availability |

This is the land of options! The competition the 6.5 Grendel provides the 6.8 SPC is bound to make the 6.8 SPC better in the long-run, and vice versa: the 6.8 SPC competition is bound to make the 6.5 Grendel better. Everybody wins, because anybody can buy either — or both calibers — as he so chooses in this land of freedom. (Support your favorite Second Amendment organization, where the real battles need to be fought!) What if the whole world were Chevys? What would the Ford guys do? And with a monopoly on pickups, what would spur Chevy to improve their product? WalkerTR wrote: "Pick your 6.X and let the folks that pick the other live in peace." Thank you, Walker. John |

+1 A week or so from now, I will own both... and enjoy both as a very contented consumer |

"An experimental rifle , with experimental ammunition (and mags) , how interesting" |
Me too. Now if someone made 5 round mags (hunting). |
Try a plug for 20 rnds...
A little piece of metal tha SAW sold me just in case I need 5 rnd cap. for Varmint Hunting |
This is gonna rock.
As for the home builders, there is some mods required to enlarge the ejection port area. So I'd just buy an upper. This should be the ar15 round that has true 1k yard performance. |
Colt? |
Arne mentioned something about Armalite...
Time will show... |
I think Remington effectively killed the 6.8 themselves when they dragged their feet on the support and distribution of the 6.8 ammo. And the lack of available bullets with a high enough BC for civilian taget shooting purposes. The last product they had out for the 6.8 was the 700 bolt rifle? |

Good news. This round has been hampered by the overly expensive uppers and lack of options. It looks like that is about to change.

From TalonArms_R's SHOT picture thread:
"A note on 6.5 Grendel. Bill Alexander has done a terrific job marketing this round. For 2006 WOLF Ammunition has announced the addition of two rounds in 6.5 Grendel have been added to the line up. With Sabre Defence and an as yet un-named major player adding it to the line up this year, it looks like the 6.5mm Grendel will be a commercial success. Please do not start a 6.5 vs. 6.8 argument in this thread. I am just reporting the facts. I am not saying 6.8 is dead or one is better than the other. The fact is, 6.5 will make major power factor and companies who plan to market to compitition shooters know that this will be a good seller. " He also states they will begin carrying Grendels.... |
Shivan, the Lapua 6.5x47, you could say, is based on the .308 case. The 6.5 Grendel is based on, ultimately, the 7.62x39 Russian case (Grendel is 6.5x39). If you're familiar with the 6mm PPC, it's closer to an improved 6.5 PPC.

Yeah, but it would be a pretty simple mod. Regardless I want to build my own upper because I just prefer to do it myself, and what I want would be too expensive since it would have to done by a custom builder..... I just want to be able to buy parts!!! |
I just saw a random picture of the Lapua round at the SHOT show and thought maybe it was the same and Lapua refused to use the "trade name" -- now I know. Thanks. |

It's VERY far from dead with the likes of Silver State, Hornady and BH coming on line with 6.8SPC loadings. The 6.5G has its place in the mix, maybe not with the select few .mil units. A 16" RECCE type in 6.5G would very peacefully co-exist with my 6.8SPCs. WTR: I'm happy to hear the 6.5G is picking up steam in the commercial market. In this case, diversity is a good thing. Edit to correct: WTW to WTR |

DocGKR, Have you procured a 16" or shorter 6.5G for testing? |
NICE |
I really like the Grendel and have always been a big fan of the 6.5mm bullet. I have been wanting a 2nd AR if ammo becomes cheaper and more available I might just built one.
Cool.
Who is going to carry a 18" with FF rail? Looks like the players are Talon Arms, PK and Alexander have completed uppers. AR15 barrels.com makes custom ones. Anyone stocking these? Edited. |
Ammo is due from Wolf in May/June. $7/20rds.
What's the mag price? Who will have them, and when? If Armalite came onboard, when do you think their uppers would be in production? Is 14.5" enough barrel to hunt with sub-200yds? |
Mags are available for ordering right now, scroll to bottom of page: cproductsllc.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/00281.5.2254663533400032394 I would guess summer for Armalite products. AA has also announced 14.5" and 16" uppers. They will be available starting on Monday through competitionshooting.com - shipping within one week is what Arne told me this afternoon. These are different from the 16" GCS currently on their site. These have chome moly chambers and bores, are a lighterweight coutour barrel, A2 FSBs, less than $600. Hunt what with? |
Whitetail. What's Arne's price on the 14.5"? |
These were the results out of the GCS 16", both were mag length loads. Deduct about 25 fps from the 16" to 14.5" barrel length. 130 Norma (.590 BC) - AA2520 powder - CCI 450 = 2425 fps 130 Swift (.571 BC) - AA 2520 powder - CCI 450 = 2425 fps The 130 Swift should work on Whitetail, of course you could use a 120 Nosler as well. Less than $600 for the AA 14.5" is what I was told. Arne just left Vegas for Houston and told me that he will be updating his site tomorrow and should be ready for orders on Monday. I bet he is fairly busy.... |

I've been sitting on a nice Leupold for some time, thinking of what to put it on. Almost got a para fal and FN SPR. I think a nice 18" rig in 6.5 will fit the bill, get low cap mags for hunting and higher for whatever else. Down the road, a 16" middy is sure to be out.
Other than the 6.8, I think this caliber is fitting in for those who like to have the two calibers(5.56/7.62) Mark |
You can find the prices on the 16" uppers and most new products here:
www.competitionshooting.com/ There is enough developement for this round to do the 1k range in an ar platform. And also be able to use the heavier bullets for hunting. |
Where? All I see is the "old stuff". |
Nope, not yet. Only the GCS 16 is listed today. This is a different model from the 14.5" and 16" "tactical" models unveiled at SHOT. The 14.5" and 16" "tactical" models should be listed tomorrow, as well as the mags. Tim - the model you fired is the GCS 16 and, yep, it is currently on the site. Here is the link to the thread including a pic of the GCS 16: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=266995 CSS will be selling the new hi-cap mags also, but Arne posted over at 65Grendel "dont be a twit, buy them at the reduced rates today before they (the manufacturer) end the SHOT show special." As I noted above, he is on his way back from Vegas right now and will not update with the new products until tomorrow sometime... |
For ordering, do we know how many they have made/available immediately? I ordered 3 just now. Thanks!!!! |
