I want a M4 style barrel 14.5 inch. And, I want a vortex or A2 style flashhider to permently attach. My question was how to attach and make legal.

No clear answer, and I am more confused now than before I asked the question.

Can I do it myself? Pin, weld, or what?????

How did ATF take you for a loop?

ETA- The A2 won't work, it isn't long enough.

You may attach the Phantom or Vortex via:

blind pin and weld
fully weld perimeter
4 cirumferential welds every 90 degrees
silver solder

+1 for what the others have said and if you are unsure about doing it yourself send it to adcofirearms.com and tell them you need the oal to be legal with a permanent attatchment

There are several vendors in the EE or Industry section that have Permenant FH installed on 14.5" barrels.....all you need to do is purchase and your legal.

I have been out of the ar-15 loop quit a while.  What is the legal length of a barrel that can be threaded rather than install of permanent FH.

16" I do believe.

The barrel must be 16" in length overall. The 14.5" barrels MOST always have a permanently fixxed flash hider which is at least 1.5" in length.  People usually use the phantoms or Vortex hidders for this as the standard A2 style is not long enough.

Note: In many states you can SBR a rifle and have a barrel length under 16". Most people see having an SBR with a 14.5" barrel as kind of a waste.

I thought it was 16".  I'm going to have Adco thread and install the Vortex on my 16" Bushy.  I can't believe i waited this long to do this!

But if you have a 14.5" and SBR lower it is only a matter of time till you get a 11.5" or 10" upper!

For what it's worth-
CMMG makes a 14.7 inch barrel, so when the standard A2 flash hider is permanently attached, the OAL goes to 16.1"  The difference between a 14.5" and the 14.7" is almost imperceptible.  You can buy the whole barrel or upper with the A2 already permanently installed.  You should check it out, much better than the Vortex or Phantom.

Here comes the obligatory............

"....why would you want a 16" barrel where a big part of it is flash hider, you
know it will kill velocity..........."

OK, I just had to.

You can install a vortex on a 16" barrel, just screw it on. Have ADCO install it on a 14.5'. I had them put a Phantom on a 14.5" LMT upper for me.
