Hey ya'll it's been one cold boring winter! I needed a project so I bought an Olympic Arms Lower and have been putting it together piece by piece, paycheck to paycheck! I'm starting to get to the upper and was wondering about the twist rates that most of the manufactures have to offer! I'm gonna put a 24" Stainless Fluted Bbl on it and was gonna use it for Ground squirrel to wolf. What would the be best twist rate for 40gr up to 65gr? I have a 22-250 that has a 1 in 14" but I can't shoot the bigger bullets accurately would a 1 in 9" or even a 1 in 12" be better suited for the .223/5.56? Thanks for any info as I've poured through my AR magazines and reloading books and can't find enough info to answer my questions!

For the superlight varmint rounds, get a 1 in 12, for just about everything else 55gr and up, get a 1/7 or 1/8.

For the light weight hp. just about any twist will due, what you will need to comcern yourself with is primarilary bbl quality.  just don't use hornet bullets and they won't explode, trust me.
Irecomend 1/7,8,9.

I was thinking that if I got a 1/9" or a 1/8" twist that I would be O.K.! Like I said I was planning on shooting 55 grainers for the most part but also wanted plenty of versitility as well. I'm gonna purchase a stock 1/7 or 1/8 twist later for plinking.... hanks

From what I understand, as well, a1/9 is the best all around twist. Somewhere I read that lighter bullets in a 1/7 twist bbl stand a chance of being pulled apart to centrifugal force since the bullet will be spinning at approx 300,000 rpm. A 1/9 will stabilize the 62gr but not tear the 40gr apart.

I've shot plenty (hundreds) of 45 grain Winchester White Box through 20" 1/8 and 1/7 tubes and have never lost a single one in mid-air.
