Question about stocks

I have a CAR style collapsible stock on my lead thrower, but I want to put a M4 style buttstock on, no reason really, just like the looks of it. Can I just swap stocks, or do I need to replace the receiver extension? I think it would just be a drop-in correct? or am I wrong?

Pull the older CAR style off, drop the newer style on. Just make sure you figure out whether you have the spec or aftermarket size buffer tube.

The buffer tube I have now measures roughly 1.170" (O.D.) not including the square piece on the bottom with the "stops"

The buffer tube I have now measures roughly 1.170" (O.D.) not including the square piece on the bottom with the "stops"

You have an aftermarket tube... any of the regular name manufactures stocks should fit on it (RRA, Bushy, etc) -- you will not be able to use a milspec stock however (Crane, Vltor, Colt) unless you change out the tube.
