The shorter barrel will have slightly less velocity and slightly better accuracy, all things being equal. 20 inches is the general max in 5.56MM, although many precision shooters use 16 inch barrels with excellent results as well.

As far as precision goes, there really isn't going to be a big difference, to a degree. Precision will be more difference barrel to barrel than length to length.
For length, the extra 4" can give you more velocity as you can have more time to burn powder before the bullet exits the bore. This will can give you better long range ballistics, and also makes it easier to keep a bullet in the sonic velocities at longer rangers. This helps precision at extreme ranges, (around 900-1000 yards). The 24" does allow for a longer sight radius, depending on use and length of a tube. For most uses, the extra 4" of barrel is extra weight, so it really depends on what type of shooting you are looking into doing. |

Pro: more velocity, less flash Con: Theoretically less accurate (hard to notice in pratice), heavier, less manueverable. 20" pretty much reverse everything above. All in all, i'd go with the 20" if this ever might be called upon as a defensive weapon. If it is just a varminter/target gun. Then the weight/velocity tradeoff may be worth it. |

I have 16", 20", and 24" bulls. I think the 24" bulls make you look like a mutch cool accuracy nut at the bench. I think the 20"'s perform every bit as well. It is a good thing the 24"'s look good at the bench, b/c you do not really want to take it anywhere. It is heavy and awkward.
If I had to pick one, I would take the 20" so it would be more practicle for field and bench work. I probably wouldn't have the 24" rifles, except I got a good deal on the barrells (stainless, fluted, 24" bulls - @$200 for two (yeah, $100 each), NIB-DPMS) Dan |

For the most part I agree with what's posted above, BUT, if your intended target ranges are over 600 yards, say from 600-1000 yards, then you'll benefit greatly from the added 4 ".
