Fair price for a pre-ban Colt gov't carbine????

I'm a new guy to the boards,

A friend is looking to sell his Colt AR15 Carbine to me, but we need to agree to a fair price.
It is in great used condition without the box or papers. It is a Pre-ban (94) gov't carbine (he bought new in the early 90's) with the collapsible stock, light weight barrel, and fixed carry handle, it does not have a bayonet lug. All original with one Colt mag. The rifle was never shot much either.

What is a fair price? I don't want to screw him, but I don't want to give him more than fair value either.

Check a blue book for guns. Off hand I would say no more than $1000.?

Preban doesn't mean anything anymore unless you live in an AWB complaint state. Its just another 10+ year old Colt.

It's probably in the $1000 range, plus or minus a hundred dollars or so.

Check what used ones are going for over on www.gunbroker.com and www.gunsamerica.com. Als0, www.auctionarms.com Be sure to check completed auctions, not just those currently for sale.

It sounds like a blue label GC as a few came without the bayo-lug. As a collector myself I gotta say theres nothing special about the gun you described and they were not very popular even back in the day. The lack of a bayo-lug hurt the value then and hurts it even more now. I would not pay more than $900.00 for it. Actually I would pass and wait for a green label GC!

Today I think a N.I.B. green label GC would bring somewhere between $1150.00 to $1400.00 as long as its well advertised and the seller is a little patient. I expect to see these increase in value as time marches on with the possibility of them once again topping the $2000.00 mark.

I seen a 1972 version a couple weeks ago and it was priced at $1,400.00 with no box.
It still has the paint mark where Colt staked the castle nut on the stock

Sounds like a Colt Carbine (R6521) instead of a Gov't Carbine (R6520). Is the serial number prefix "CC" or "GC"?

What's the serial number? Leave off the last 2 digits.

I don't know if later Govt Carbines were made without bayo lugs or not.

Note the serial number cutoff on this model, as Colt shipped out a lot of unstamped post-ban law enforcement only "LEO" rifles before finally stamping them as a restricted rifle.

I worked for a FFL/dealer back during the ban who specialized in Colt AR15s. I personally found and made a deal to purchase 20 N.I.B. Colt carbines from a Colt distibutor. I am almost positive all of the guns we received had bayo-lugs. The boxes they came in were original Colt blue label Govt. carbine boxes. Heck I think a few were even in plain unmarked Colt AR15 boxes! Anyway, while I worked there (which was for about 3 years) I did see several pre-ban era Colt Govt. carbines and Colt carbines that did NOT have bayo-lugs. I also remember that they did not appear to have been altered by the owners. The rumor was such guns were Colts last ditch effort at making them "politically correct" in order to try to prevent them from being banned. I hope this info helps those that own them or want to buy them!
