Is there any way to tell difference between cast and forged? The reason I ask is I have an older DPMS and all the markings on the lower are in raised letters as opposed to the newer receivers that have them set in. I have heard people talk about the problems with these and I would like to know what I have.

Check out the Olympic Arms web site. They used to have a photo comparison of forged vs. cast. If your lettering is raised then yes you have a cast receiver. I don’t know how the DPMS cast receiver quality is but I do own a Oly cast “Plinker” receiver. Let’s just say it’s serving as a platform for my sons .22LR AR.

I find that both the action and feel of the receiver are rougher.

Slide a finger over it and it seems that a cast lower or upper will have a grain to it.

Mine does feel kinda rough. But other than that all the edges are crisp and no tool marks at all.It is a very nice looking lower.

Comparing photos of the DPMS cast receivers vs. my Oly cast receiver, the DPMS seems to be of a MUCH higher quality.

You more than likely will be fine with a cast lower unless you are abusive or buttstrike your rifle.

proof that cast is now inferior, especially for what forged ones are going for nowadays i dont see the point.

Agree with Eklik  There must be a reason why Olympic went to  forged on all there units including the "Plinker Plus" I think there used to be a thread on some cast catastrophy -Pardon that one. Olympic claims it is an improvement(cast vs. forged_
