does anyone know specifically if an AR15 would be legal to purchase in New Jersey

Carry one into your local police station and ask them.

I believe that post ban style AR15s (but not with the specific "Ar15" name on them) are legal in NJ. They cannot have a bayonet lug, collapsible stock or flash suppressor and I think you are limited to 15 round mags. You should probably check in the NY/NJ forum to be sure, it is under "Hometown."
