for those who didn't follow the link, here is a snapshot

Last specs I read about the M24 rifles, was that it was accurate up to and including just a little over 875 yards.

So, either good job for that guy, or way to take someone's credit :-).

I hope that the guy is out of Iraq and not going back.  Otherwise, he is a walking highway sign during hunting season.  Does the army need heros that bad?

An accurized 308 bolt gun shooting quality match loads is good to go to 1000 yards for sub MOA accuracy.  Even further for minute of bad guy.  I'm pretty sure the M24 can do much better than what official specs claim.

The military purposely downgrades the capability of their systems when they make a public info release, even if the data ain't classified.

Pushing .308 that distance is well- amazing. I use .300 Remington Ultra Mag for such distances but honestly no where near as impressive of shots as being able to hit a man at that distance with cross wind, heat, moving target, and a bullet that is tumbling. Impressive to say the least- are you sure he is Marine Corp or Army?

So are they saying the insurgent had just made an equally long shot with a 'long-barreled Kalashnikov' in hitting the sergeant? I guess that could have been a Dragunov-style Romak or something in 7.62x54. Or, maybe the sergeant was at some other location closer to the insurgent. They don't really say.

I am assuming it's the latter.  There's no way anyone is going to make a 1200 meter shot with a Dragunov knockoff that's been dragged halfway across Iraq behind a truck.

I know the article states "7.62mm" however, I have heard that many US SF snipers are using the same Rem rifle chambered in 300 Win Mag...which is also 308 caliber.  Whereas the 308 Win is a 7.62x51 (or 7.62 NATO), the 300 Win Mag would be a 7.62x?? (though I don't know if the military is using 7.62 as a designator for the 300 WM).

Either way, that is a nice shot!  Kudos to our boys!

I do know they make the M24 with optional .300 Win Mag- which would be better for those distances. My stick is a full custom Remington with quite a few tweeks- in .300 Remington Ultra Mag, 26" free heavy taper, full length aluminum bedded stock, Vaiss comp, tac knob, match at .002 over "Go", 10x mil-dot with 20MOA bases, all in OD green of course! I just prefer the .300 RUM over the Win, spacing off the neck instead of the ring plus, and pushing a 165gr at 3400 FPS factory loads, 3600+ with custom, damn. Plenty of MOA to run out on the glass without relocking in that caliber.  

However those articles are one hell of tribute to some real talent, esspecially if they are running 7.62NATO sticks- amazing, absolutely amazing.

I live in Ohio bro'- 1300 yards in 7.62NATO, the round is a subsonic unpredictable tumbling monkey at that distance. 1000 yards and it's just getting to that point which the Palma runs.

My buddy in the 10th S.F.G. told me they use .300 Win. Mag. He also admitted to getting a little too close to the scope and *WHACK!* took a cut above the eye.
