Did Colt ever sell any small pin/teardrop fwd. assist SP-1's I'am researching this for someone who may sell the upper. He says he bought the rifle in the early 80's and the rifle was a SP-1 Colt.
Thanks

Colt made some odd things, so its possible he got something from the factory that way, but I didn't think they made any that way as a standard model.

The easy thing would be to ask to see the complete weapon....

I'am not going to buy this upper from him I was going to try and sell it for him, but before I did I wanted to make sure what he had. He no longer has the complete rifle, he parted it out a long time ago. What markings should I look for on the upper to check if its a Colt.
THANKS

IIRC Colt ar15 were small pin up to around 1967, not sure if they had the SP1 monicker then, though.

My SP1 was shipped in Oct of 1966 and has the large pivot pin and marked SP1.

As has EVERY SP1 ever made.  And I'm sorry, NO SP1 (or 2) was ever shipped with a forward assist. Colt was too damn busy those years making FA uppers to put on M16A1s to use any on the SP series.

The only thing CDNN has ever pissed me off about was (is) they're labelling those uppers they have SP1s.

If your friend has a small hole, forward assist upper, he did not get it off an SP1.
