My dad has had his Colt A1 since the 70s and I told him he should consider selling it and getting a mutt gun since he uses it alot and it may possible be collectable. So if you could give me an idea of what its worth I would appreciate it. I have the original a1 grip also so its all original. Originally paid $450ish back in the day
Also a possible price on the DPMS. Just a $100 tasco tactical scope on it but as far as the rifle itself what kind of price. I think he paid under $600 for it. Colt SP1-    DPMS-

You cannot get those prices around here. I paid $900 for my Colt SP1 (1971 vintage) which I would grade at 80%. Since the ban fell, I dont think they dropped much.... but there are WAY too many out there to call them much of a collectors item, especially not once it has been fired. Locally, I'd say $850 to $1100, depending on the buyer. Those scopes are worth $200 to $300 typically, to collectors, if they are really clean.
I would keep it if he likes it, or send it up to NY and get two or three stripped lowers in return. |

Hmm so $1400ish high end for the package. Any idea on the DPMS? He likes it but I think its becuase its all hes ever known. He is always buying cheapy accessories to go on it(as we speak a $40 light/laser) so its not a concern of his to be an original colt. I just tell him we should sell it and get a m4gery for him to plink/hunt with. Not to mention a few accessories with the left over money. |

That gun is from the 80s. I had a SP129xxx I bought NIB at the end of 1980.
It is also not in a stock configuration, you need to get an A1 grip on there. Of course if you do not have the original grip, you have really lost some of the authenticity of the gun. Do you have the original box? The two original 20 round magazines with 5 shot blocks? What about the original manual? Without all of those things, it is really not a "collectible", but more of an old and out-dated AR-15. |

I have the original grip as stated. I know the manual is around somewere but the box is long gone. As far as original mags I beleive they may be around also. serial # link |

I bought a semi original SP1 Serial number 183,XXX. I called colt and it was made in 1982. Yours would be an 1981 and possible but unlikely 82. Just call Colt if you want. It's free to find out the year. I paid $600.00 and it was to much. I have been shopping for these guns. You can buy a 95% for $995 .00 it seems pretty easily. So at $600.00 I got scr!@#$. If to gun is between 90% to 100% you should be able to get $850.00 to $1000.00 for it on Guns of America. Go on there do a search and you'll see what I mean. I just passed on a 98% one for $925.00 with shipping in MN. I still have that guys name if anyone is interested. But, I have spent alot of time the past 2 weeks figureing all this out. Just wondering how bad I got it. I will never buy another site unseen gun adn then leave town before it gets here. Oh well, Good luck. If I was him. I would just clean it up... And put lots of lube on it. Store it for a few years. Maybe shoot it sometimes. But definately keep it.

And the REALITY IS .......... They ain't makin SP1s any more. The existing ones will mostly get beat up or parted out in a few more years. Put it up for sale and SOMEONE SOMEWHERE will meet your price , if you wait a bit.

Call 1 800 962 COLT...... They will tell you for sure. My vote is 1981. And maybe a weak maybe for 1982. That way you know for sure. But, don't call between 12 and 1 PM eastern Standard time. Out to lunch.

1 800 962 COLT.... I did last week and my serial number was 183,XXX made in 1982. So, your about 12,000 away. 1981 my guess. The Colt call is free.

 There are thousands and thousands of them from the 70's.... even more from the 80's. You think they are all gonna get beat up or parted out in a "few years"

Lets see... 20" fluted bull - nice. Hi-rise upper - not so nice. Float tube, harris bipod, SPR grip, el-cheapo scop and rings.... I'd say around $700 to $900 as a package. |

So , If we distributed those SP1 s equally - among the approximately 200 million ADULTs in the U.S......... That would mean about 1 of every 1000 ADULTS could own an SP1 I bet More people than that own BMWs
