AHHH!!!
I just scratched my BRAND NEW AR right across the logo side of the lower! Metal is showing beneath the scratch VERY prominently. What do I do?!?!? |
Leave it alone and be proud of it.
You just need a good story to tell when people ask about it. |
Go shoot it! It's a tool, not a show piece. If it is a show piece, sorry to hear
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. If it bothers you that much, refinish it. No big deal. |
What are my options?
Is there "touch up" paint or anything needed to protect the scratched area? |
I scratched my duracoated pimp AR like that, ferget about it.
edit sure there are paints you can putt on it-Brownells probably has some |
If the scratch is a big deal to you, try this: AlumaHyde II
Please don't suggest getting it refinished like some other member did a while back when he dropped his. Like in the post above...it is a tool. Yeah it sucks but unless you're trying to keep it in like new condition to sell it later...leave it be.
Birchwood-Casey paint touch-up paint pens. In flat or gloss, avaiable from Brownell's, Bushmaster and probably your local gun shop.
No, it's not a show piece, but it only has 160 rounds through it. It's still a baby.
I just want to make sure the scratch won't cause any problems with the finish besides cosmetic looks. How well do those "super black touch-up" pens work on an AR? |
I don't think our men and women in the armed forces worry about it. You shouldn't either. |
I'm actually trying to change out the factory latch with a PRI charging handle latch.
I don't have a 1/16" punch. Any ideas on how to do this a different way? |
That won't stand out too much..... Try using CLP and it will probably come off. If you are really brave, post a picture so we can see what you are making a big deal of. |
No way! I'll get made fun of. |
I managed to scratch a lower putting in the bolt release pin. used a cold blue pen I picked up at Walmart, and it disappeared.

Dude you just gave me flashbacks of basic.
Clatter (sound only an M16 (or AR15) makes when hitting the floor) Drill Sargeant "GO DOWN WITH IT" Soldier "1 DRILL SARGEANT, 2 DRILL SERGEANT, 3 DRILL SERGEANT" etc. Do 20 pushups if you must to make yourself feel better. PA |
Yes, you would. Start reading the tech threads, and ignore the scratches. While you're at it, ask your woman for your teste's back, K? |
it looks like you used a touchup pen. Leave the scratch |
Touch up pens blow. Use Aluma Black, Aluma Hyde, or whatever they call it. It oxidizes the aluminum and turns it black. Other than reparkerizing, I think it is the best you will get. |

Use Aluminum Black by Birchwood Casey. It works on bare aluminum spotsI have used it myself I must shamefully admit
Drag it behind a pickup for awhile, throw some dirt on it, maybe use the shit out of it. Drop in on concrete a few times. You'll hardly even notice that first scratch, and your rifle will thank you. Chicks dig scars, AR owners like thier rifles to look like they've been there and done that.
I'm never going to get him to post a picture if you guys keep posting helpful stuff.....
Ok, I gotta ask......how did you scratch the lower if you are changing the CH latch? You didn't try doing it while it was on the rifle did you?.... |
I was trying to press the front assembly pin out with something metal and I slipped.
It's a tool...you'll get over the nightmares within 8 weeks. Trust us!
Now go shoot the crap out of it!!! Tack |
I still can't get this freaking roll pin out! Does wal-mart have punch tools?
Bummer...........but, been there, done that....don't fret too much, there will be more. |
No, you need to use a large nail, chisel, or crowbar...... then show us pictures. |
We will tell you how to change out that pin if you post pics of the scratch
Without a picture, there isn't much we can do to help.........
You know the roll pin...that serves as an axle for the charging handle latch? I'm trying to push that little guy out.
I can't see the pictures yet......
I've used a finishing nail, but yes, Wallyworld usually has a nail punch or standard punch set that will help. If you use a thin nail punch, remember that it has a taper, and pounding it too hard can make things bad. |
Cream or suppository? |
It ain't a scratch till you get past the anodizing. Even then, it's not important.
+100 on the sharpie, i cant even tell the diffrence, i have used this method alot.... what do you think they do at the factory. they just touch up the mars with a sharpie or pen
Just went to Walmart and came back. Walmart doesn't have a punch small enough.
Get a small finishing nail. Also for the scratch get some Aluminum Black. Wal Mart may carry it still. Just degrease teh scartched area and use a Q-tip etc. to put some on the scratched area only.
Got it.
I got a tiny little nail and got the roll pin started, then used needle nose pliers to finish the job. Thanks to everyone who helped me out. |
Try a small finishing nail, you my have to find the right spot with the latch to realease som epressure on the roll pin to get it out easy, it should come out easy
Go to Sears and buy just the punch you need. Even a whole set is not that expensive. |
I'm going to purchase a punch set ASAP after this ordeal this evening.
I left the original roll pin in and just tapped it back in with the PRI latch. It seems to function just fine now. I'll have to pick up something to cover that lovely scratch tomorrow. |
No. Because I know that my original post was full of the emotion of the moment. I can't even feel the scratch with my finger. It's a whitish colored scratch from the corner of an AR mag. What do you all recommend to clean it up?
I tried CLP already, but I just wiped it on and then off. Would it help if I let CLP sit on there a bit? |
