Is there a way to tell that a gun was made from the serial number?

Is that a when question?

I believe Colt will research the weapon for $100 or so

All you have to do is call Colt Customer Service and tell them the serial number..they will tell you when it was made, free of charge, over the phone..

I do it all the time..

Mid '70s? Had them in Marine Corps in 77 if I remember right, though I remember some still had 3 prong.

Actually, Biggerhammer has more than one list.

You can tell box type, fh, etc.

And check out the cool credit at the bottom.

The birdcage FSs came out in the sixties on the A1. They close the bottom slots on the A2.
