This is my first .22LR build. I built it for my son for Christmas.

Superior Arms blemished lower refinished with Norrel's flat black
Unknow T-marked flattop upper
Bushy Carry handle
Colt 20" pencile barrle
M261 kit
I was going for as light weight( and cheap) as i could. I wish it was a 16" light weight barrel but hay this one was cheap

I am going to change out the upper for an A1 upper after the first of the year. Along with the forarms to make it a A1 complete upper

Yes its his first gun. Most liky not the best rifle for a first rifle he won't be able to shoot it standing up but i will get a bi-pod for it so he can shoot prone or off a bench.

Wow, that's pretty cool! If you don't mind me asking, how old is he, and how much $ do you have into the rifle? That's a great Christmas present, especialy when it's built by you.

The M261 is just an drop in assembly and 22LR mags right? So that means when he grows up you can just change bolts and give him a full sized chambering.

I have about $377 in it .

I got the barrel complete for $72 ( like i said it was cheap) EE boards
lower striped $75 RB Precision
upper complete $75 EE boards
stock $55 RB Precision
m261 kit $100 EE boards
carry handle $0 spare i had
LPK $0 used set from a pre-ban lower i traded to a still ban state.

As for my son he is 6 years old and has been shooting a bb gun for a year already. I belive in starting them young on gun saftey and handleing.

I am sure most of us here in Iowa would love to be able to, unfortunetly cans are EVIL and liberals had them banned already.

By the way E3, that is an awesome gift for your son! Are you going to start bringing him out on shoot days come warmer weather?

it's nice you are starting him off young. I did the same....I emphasized the safety aspect and just let them cultivate the dirt for a few years without getting upset if they missed the target. As long as they were in control of their weapon.
My youngest at six years old was in a gun shop and the store owner handed him a .22 Chipmunk single shot. (by then my son had already had his own auto pistol and shot full autos of several brands) When the store clerk handed him the gun, instinctively the muzzle went to the floor and he pulled open the bolt and checked the chamber...at 6 years old...I was a proud daddy.
just keep it wholesome between the two of you...

Great project and gift.
I am 52 but will consider you if you are looking to adopt another son
Yes-he will need a bipod or sandbags for the bench for a bit yet but this is a gun he can learn with and enjoy with you for years to come.
It will look kind of dumb but he might need an adjustable stock for a couple of years yet.I have seen some young tykes have a lot of trouble with the concept of lineing up front and rear sights along with the target. This gun should be easy with the peep type rear but this is something to watch for. Sometimes a cheepo red dot is the way to go. (can you see the dot? put it where you want the bullet to hit and pull the trigger.)
You are a great dad,how in the heck are you going to keep up this level of gifts-buy him a Corvette when he is 12 and hookers and blow when he is 13?

I would like to thank everyone for the kind words. I hope my son is not to young to relize what he is getting this year. And like some one else said i don't know how i will top this gift next year. I will get you all a update after Christmas on how he reacted to it and our first trip to the range with it. This is a big year for my son he started school this year He went deer hunting with me for the first time this yaer also. And soon his first rifle. Damn they grow up fast !!!!!!

my 2 cents-The M261 kit tends to be a little finicky. i have used it both in my RRA and Bushmaster and cheap mags tend to result in lots of misfeeds. I have 10 261 mags and have them all inserted in D and H Mags. If you use the 30 rounders the 261 seems to go in easier than intoa 20 round mag. You can tilt them a little more which seems to make insertion easier. The bolt will get dirty fast. Clean it often. Also fire a few 223 rounds every so often. I am told if you don't the gas tube becomes clogged. Gander Mountain and a brick of 500 for $8 and he will have a ball.

No not yet

My son loves his new rifle he has been bugging me to go to the range and try it out. It is all he can talk about. I keep it locked up in the safe so he hasn't seen it much. I hope he not to young to start on a rifle of this size. I should have started him on a Chipmunk type rifle or a 10/22.
But this will have to do for now.

Hope I did that right.

I decided that the lack of a loading ramp and stiff manual cocking knob means that the Chipmunk sucks big time. Going to go with either the Savage Cub, or the CZ Scout.

An AR for christmas = Father of the year . Thought about a colapsable stock? Might fit a 6 year old better.

I saw a fella in at the Fin (the local outdoors store) buyin' his son a .223 a couple days after Christmas... $1100 gun... I was 'bout to say, hey, I'll be your kid for a week or so if you'll buy me one of them, too. lol. Ended up buyin' myself an Armscor M-1600. $170 for the gun, and some nice cheap .22lr ammo for it is all I can afford right now... Dang college. :)
