what ranges have you fired your AR's at?   and what ammo?

using M193 or M855, what would you consider to be YOUR maximum effective range?
under general field conditions (- last HP match i went to, one shooter said "do we shoot even if its raining - what if it gets too windy or starts to snow?   the RO said "yes.")  

oh yeah - i have fired only on reduced courses for HP shooting  - 200 yds max.  i have hit steel plates human torso sized at 350 everytime informally from resting over a tailgate for a shot - little or no wind, M855 ammo.  only longer range shooting with my AR done.
 

The longest I've shot is around 250 or so with my 20". I was using Wolf and no sandbags but it was still pathetic. Maybe 4 rounds out of 6 hit the target center and it was so wide there was no grouping.....

The accurized M16/AR15 rifle DOMINATES HighPower events.  You shoot at 200, 300 and 600 yards in the STANDARD course.  The Black Rilfe is fired at 1000 yards in the long range service rifle events.  It wins too...

at 200 yards most any match bullet will work, Sierra is quite popular but Nosler and Hornady are excellent as well.  Lots of shooters have gone to using the 77 grain Sierra for all yard lines (I think the Marines do...one load XTC) but most will use the Sierra 80 for 600 and the 1000.  Sierra recently released a 90 grain bullet and, just like the 77s, and 80s, you need a fast twist barrel to properly stabilize that round.  77s and 80s need 1X8 and the 90 require 1X6.5 (I think)

If your only shooting reduced courses, the 52 grain matchking shoots really good.

Forget ball ammo if your looking for good groups and score.

And to answer your question, I've shoot XTC 200-600 yards with my Match AR's.

I just got back from range today very nice day to shoot . I aligned my scope today on my BM 20" and was very happy with it.  At 100 yd was shooting  right on bulls eye with 1" groups thats with federal 55gr cheaper ammo that BM shoots great!  Now my buddie has one just like mine and he was shooting  a hand load 55gr and I GOT TO GET SOME OF THAT from him i watched him as she shot 4 groups and 3 of the 4 after 3 shots you could cover all 3 with a dime and im not kidding!not sure what his load was but i will be checking on it.           then at 200 yds i shot (same ammo) about 11/2 groups   sand bag shooting of course on all of it today. his was about a inch group. no wind perfect conditions.  any way had a great time and thats what its all about .

i usually shoot the federal 55 gr in the HP matches - average scores.  i was just thinking "minute of bad guy" i guess.

kbhag:  i like the 68 gr hornady and 69 gr sierra as well - both seem to shoot well in my bushy.  it stabilizes the 75 gr hornady's as well.  the 68's i shot across the course once and was pleasantly surprised.  next season, thats what i'm going to use - good handloads and either 68's or 69's.

most M855 ammo at 200 yds seems to "pattern" instead of group.  i managed to keep it all on the steel plate.  just wondering if anyone else shoots milsurp or clone ammo at anything past 200yds and what they are accomplishing.

i want to do more "plinking" but want to be able to hit something a little further out as well.

100 to 600 yards, RRA NM Service Rifle

I keep loading simple and shoot 75 gr Hornady HPBTS from 100 to 300 yds, and 75 gr Hornady Amax from 500 to 600 yards.

I have not tried beyond 600 yards.  When I do, I will probably use a Model 70 in 260 Remington pushing 139 gr Lapua match bullets.

100-600 yards, Armalite National Match

100-300 i use Black Hills 68gr match HP
600 yards i use 82gr handloads

I have had no problem shooting 1/2 MOA at 500 yards, out of a 20 inch barrel, using Black Hills 75 grain match. The barrel is 1/7 match grade, and to be honest shoots the 77 grain stuff better, 1/3 MOA at 100 yards. But I shoot the 75's, their cheaper.

I dont know how it is at 600 our range only goes to 200yds.  Buddie and I are planning on making our own range on his farm complete withshooting tables  for up to 500 yds from 25 yds and closer for handguns also.  Hope we can get this done soon.

Why do you need shooting tables?

400 yds with xm193 out at the farm with A2 sights out of a LE6520.  Its surprisingly easy to make hits when you know where you are hitting.

300 meters, M855 green tip from 20" 1/9 hbar w/ TA-31RCO-A4. Grouped into 6 inches, and that was 10 shots in 10 seconds. I plan to go out to 5-600 and slow-fire next time out. My Lake City M855 shoots under an inch at 100.

Shooting tables are nice for sandbag shooting such as zeroing rifle scopes and such.  We shoot more than our ARs  and there are some young shooters we are working with that (some cant at least) cant hold a full size long gun up for any lenght of time yet.  We start teaching them young when they can be confortable they learn alot of saftey and basics better then later the off hand shooting is worked on. Tables arnt a must but for what we shoot they do help.

300 yards on 10" steel plates and homemade man man-sized silhouettes while on the move with a 20" A2 Bushmaster and a Colt 6920 w/Aimpoint M2 using Wolf 62FMJ ammo. At 300 yards the 4 MOA dot covers the 10" steel plates. The plates are kind of tricky, but the silhouettes are not to bad to get center of mass hits on with either weapon. My range runs Practical rifle/pistol shoots about once per month and we usually advance from the 300 yard line towards the targets with various stations in between. I like running the course with my carbine than transitioning to my Glock for the close-in targets.
