Just to make sure I've got my facts straight, with a 12" forend on a rifle length gas system, the gas block will be past the end of the forend, like the A2, right?

I prefer the look of a low profile gas block under the forend.  With an 18" barrel and a rifle length gas system, it's looking like I'm not going to have that option.  It's possible to get the 18" barrel I want with a mid-length gas system, but I'd prefer rifle length.  I also like to have as much of the barrel covered as possible.  Is there a forend made that's longer than LaRue's 13.2"?

12" will not cover the block and 13.2" is the longest made.

Damn.

Is the rail on the Larue 13.2" high enough to match up with the A3 upper rail?  It looks farther from the center than the rest of the rails, and I'm hoping that's the reason why.

It is the same height as the receiver.

13.2" is longest made by Larue but there are others that are longer.

(that's a 16" tube on a 24" barrel.  And yes, it's a heavy SOB.)

That's hot.  Who makes it?

I believe that's the Olympic FIRSH handguard.

I wouldn't waste your time on non Mil Spec rails as they are sharper due to the longitudinal cuts not to mention they don't accept some equipment properly. They completely suck to carry, but if you want a rail system just for looks on a bench rifle, the FIRSH may cover what you want.

I'd throw away thirty FIRSH rails for just one Larue. That's just my opinion though.

So then is LaRue's 13.2 inch the longest quality manufacture mil spec forend made?  That's what it's looking like.

Currently, although I heard that a vendor was trying to convince LaRue to make a 14" tube for the AR10. If I am not mistaken they use the same forging for both types, so a 14" AR tube would likely be introduced.

my dial up is too slow to investigate, but doesnt JP Enterprises make a really long free floating forend?

JP makes one as well as DPMS.  The DPMS tube is just a 16" long version of their plain aluminum free-float tube.  The JP one is their model that has rails you can attach at different positions.  I don't know the actual length except that it is listed as being long enough to cover a rifle gas port.

Cool, I'll check into both of those.
