Hey all...

I have a Colt pre-ban ar-15 match target and would like to put a colt collapsible M-4 stock on it in place of the orginal stock.....
Can someone tell me how to get the old stock off?  I have no "smithing" experience and am sort of a newbie at this sort of thing.....

Any help and/or suggestions greatly appreciated...
Thanks

tj

First click on the 'Information' button above go to the Downloads section and download a copy of the -23&P Direct Support Maintenance for the M16/M4.

Chapter 3 will cover removal & installation of the stocks.

In a nutshell to remove the fixed stock you have to unscrew the upper screw on the buttplate.  SLOWLY pull off the plastic stock (careful there is a spring & detent that will come out from the receiver as your remove the stock - DON'T LOSE THESE!!).

Open up the receiver and remove the buffer & spring (pull out the bolt carrier group as well) and close the receiver.

unscrew the receiver extension (that long tube comming out of the back of the lower reciver).  There is a tool that fits on the end - or you can use a wrench.  It should be on tight so you might have to use some muscle.  Note when you remove this the buffer detent and spring will go flying (hence keep the upper on to contain the flying detent & spring - otherwise cover the lower with a towel so you don't lose them).

Remember when you install the new stock to use some moly-disulfide grease (or other anti seizing compound) on the threads of the new receiver extension.
