I just purchased a tactical entry from RRA and realized that the barrel is chrome-moly. I ordered chromelined. The dealer is going to get me another one with a chromelined barrel. Is a chrome lined barrel better than a chrome moly one? I was told that the chrome moly barrel is more accurate but harder to clean. Trying to decide which barrel to go with. any opinions?

The chrome barrel may be slightly less accuraqte, but will last longer, be more reliable, handle heavy use better, and have better corrosion resistance.  It is an "entry" gun, therefore chrome lined is the only way to go.

Yep, chrome makes a BIG difference when you come home from the range. You don't have to spend 9 hours running patches through it.

As far as accuracy goes, on an entry gun, who cares? If you were shooting long range competition I could see the value of it, but if you're only going to be shooting at combat range, there can't be that much of a difference.

I'd still go chrome though.

Just a note:
Chrome-Moly is the composition of the barrel, not the bore.
I have a 16" Chrome-Moly barrel with Chrome lining.

Two guns, both just out of the box, one with a chrome lined barrel, the other without... No one will see an accuracy difference. If you build the gun up, add a match trigger, free float the barrel, get match sights or a magnified scope, shoot match grade ammo, *then*, MAYBE, you will see a SMALL difference in accuracy. Maybe.

A standard shooter should have chrome lining. If your building a task specific gun with specail accuracy requirements, maybe consider a match, non-chrome barrel. Otherwise, get the chrome.

+1...

Go Chrome...

chrome lined is much easier to clean and in my opinion worth the added cost.  If you're going to shoot NRA Highpower matches than you may want to stick with chromemoly or SS.

Why?
What about all your other guns?
Do you worry whether they're chrome lined or not?

The high intensity (small bore size, fast cartridge) of the 5.56mm can be a real barrel burner in rapid fire. Also, a military style arm should be easy to maintain. You dont really need to even clean the bore on an AR, just the chamber, if everything is chrome lined. Unless you're looking for that last little bit of accuracy.

this raises a question for me. Are other rifles commonly chrome lined? I know that some SKS rifles are, what else??
Do FAL's and such have chrome lined barrel?

Read Sept 2005 SWAT magazine (p48) and you might realize the main drawback of chrome barrels.  The accuracy potential is poor, and the protective element of chrome does not last as long as one might hope.  Good article.

Most of the people reading this are already at home.  That saying is dumb and dumber.
