looks like they're m4, m4a1, a2, a3, a4 and the m4ris...has anyone been able to decipher the .gov characteristics that set them apart?

There are only 3 M4 designations as far as the military has even been concerned, the M4, the M4E1/A1, and M4E2.  While early M4s were fixed carry handle, the M4 is now standardized as the Colt RO920 and the M4A1 is either the RO921 or 921HB.  The M4E2 is a since scrapped designation for the Colt RO925 w/ KAC M4 RAS.

Any additional M4 designations are those used by commercial companies to help in rapid identification of the style in which the weapon is set up, usually with A2 meaning a fixed carry handle and A3 meaning a detachable one.

Last time I looked there where the just the M4 and M4A1.
Early M4's had A2 carry handles later had flattops - AFAIK all M4A1's are flattop.
Some M4A1's have the heavy RO921 barrel others do not (depending upon unit ordering).

and original M4s had burst trigger groups and the A1 introduced the Safe/Semi/Auto- IIRC

Colt Defense web page shows 4 models::

Not sure of the mil designation of these- if any

AVAILABLE MODELS
RO977 : Flat top, Safe/Semi/Full Auto
RO979 : Flat top, Safe/Semi/Burst
RO777 : Fixed handle, Safe/Semi/Full Auto

good discussion! one question though...why does a website about office equipment have an ar site???hahahahaha a knowledgeable one at that!

i noticed on the demo m4a1 from colt they have the fire designations on the right hand side as well (although no ambidextrous selector lever). is that common for .mil models?

All recent colts have selector markings on both sides of the receiver

There's either the M4 or M4A1.  The M4 either has fixed or detachable CH and burst.  The M4A1 has the detachable CH and full auto.  The A1 is primary a SOF issued weapon and only ones that I'm aware of that has HB and shorter bbls.  Since the M16A2 came out all service rifles are now marked on both sides of the reciever for selector markings.  One of the drop improvements on the M16A2 was a ambi safety, but markings remained.

ah-ha!!! new info to add! the army has the m4 mws! fm 3-22.9 says:

The M4 carbine becomes the M4 MWS when the M4 rail adapter system is installed...

army fm 3-22.9

very complete manual!

ETA: this would NOT be designated on the rifle, though, would it? unlike the m4a1, which is...

As I said earlier the M4E2 designation did exist and specifically mention the use of the KAC M4 RAS, but this has apparently been scrapped.

The MWS (RAS) has always been part of the SOFMOD kit for the M4A1.  Along with all the other accessories.  FM 3-22.9 is still incomplete for it doesn't list M995 5.56mm AP ammo or the mounting of the PVS-17 for starters.

Wrong, the RIS is part of the SOPMOD kit.  The RAS is only issued to some Army units in SOCOM.

The RAS is standard for the rest of the regular Army(MWS).

The SOPMOD kit and MWS are not the same.

The M4 and M4A1 are not marked MWS or SOPMOD on the side of them.  Is that what you were trying to say?

Scott,

Your correct, my mistake the RIS is what was issued.  Get them mix up.  But then some of us are using the ARMS SIR #50SC now.

The ARMS SIR is not standard USGI.

Having it is not the same as having a RIS or RAS.

It kills me when someone who is up to his ass in aligators says "This is how it is in the real world".

...and someone else feels the need to correct him.
