This weekend I went jack hunting outside of Burns Oregon with a few friends and my woman. We all had a great time and I couldn't think of a more perfect weekend. So great, I figured I would share with people I know can appreciate it. So here we go..
We came over from Bend, about 3 hours west of Burns. My girlfriends father owns 1800 acres of property, basically used for bird hunting and a place that I think he comes to get away from everything. It's very flat and very dry this time of year. Departure was around 6:30am so we could get an early start and a full days worth of shooting. Got there and and got right to it. Here's me. I was anxious to get out. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3643.jpg Everyone got in their last minute sight ins and configurations. Three of us brought AR-15's and one brought his SKS and his .308 http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3646.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3644.jpg The country really is beautiful, the weather got better and better the whole time we were there. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3648.jpg We hopped into the truck and headed out, the best spot is about a quarter mile from the lodge. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3654.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3655.jpg First Blood! And guess who got it :) http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3653.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3661.jpg This one here was hit from behind while on a dead sprint. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3656.jpg Same rabbit, but each of us were standing by a sizable chunk that was flung on impact. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3659.jpg He's not going to be going anywhere. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3660.jpg These are from day two. A lovely afternoon. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3667.jpg All four of us, from the left. Jake, Eric C., Eric J., Derek (me) http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3662.jpg My Girlfriend Katie standing with the lodge in the background to the left. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3668.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3669.jpg I hit this one from behind, running away from me. The leg on the left flew literally 8 feet straight up on impact. It slid about five feet from its momentum, had to finish this one off. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3670.jpg Katie and I http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3671.jpg Sunset on Saturday http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3674.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3675.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3684.jpg Inside, Pretty much one big room with random furniture in it. Bedrooms consist of a room with 4 twin beds and two other more private rooms. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3685.jpg I dropped one of the pork chops hock.gif, good thing there was an extra. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3686.jpg Sunrise Sunday Morning. I wasn't up to see it first hand but the 2nd picture is awesome. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3688.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3691.jpg More Killing. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3695.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3696.jpg http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3697.jpg Three Killers. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3698.jpg This picture was taken to try and capture the perspective of one of Eric's shots. Picture was taken at the shot, and the impact was at Eric (white shirt, hands up). He was probably 200 yards out on the hill. http://csnwn.bendtel.net/derek/img_3700.jpg At the end of the trip the kill count was somewhere around 75 between all of us. My DPMS performed flawlessly, it's first real taste of action. These are just some of the highlights, Everything I took can be found at HERE Please feel free to post comments/questions. This is my first post, hope it gets everyones approval. |

looks like fun. Tell that guy that shooting rabbits with a shotgun isn't hunting, its cheating!
And to use #4 lead. It passes all the way through so you are less likely to be eating pellets. TRG |
The guy with the shotgun was using steel shot, and using it mainly in the area where the sage brush is too tall to see anything over 10 feet away. As far as the eating, no thanks :) We shot mainly because of the massive holes they dig all over the property. He has livestock/horses and they tend to break their legs if they step in one.

Ironic that you are in a thread about rabbits dying. ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=71&t=391213 TRG |

[liberal]See - he's wearing a video game tshirt. Video games DO cause violence![/liberal]
Mmmm, rabbit! Looks like a lot of fun - I wish my significant other had 1800 acres... |
Derek,
Great pictures. Now here's the important part - pay attention. MARRY THIS GIRL! She appears not to have devil horns or weigh 853 pounds and her dad owns this place. Go boy go. R. |
Video games told me kill. |
+1 but hell it looked fun as hell! |
What type of ammo was you using in your ARs? FMJ or HP? Because those are some spectacular holes.
Well, I doubt seriously there would of been enough anyway to feed 5 people and I know Katie would of had no part of that. Besides, everything that was killed the first day was so unrecognisable, the meat was completely ruined. The 2nd day there were some straight through shots but very few. |

I was using plain ol' Federal 55gr XM193. The other two were using 62gr. Federal I believe. |

Welcome to the forum.
One of the BEST topics Ive seen lately. Thanks for sharing looks like a lot of fun, and good kills. I really enjoy vermint shooting, please share as much as you like . |
I dropped one of the pork chops , good thing there was an extra.
WTF? you never heard of the 5 second rule? |
I was using 62 grain green tip XM855. I chose that because my AR is a Colt HBar with a 1in10 barrel twist.
What part of "hunting lodge floor" makes that sound appetizing? |
Haha, oh man. In a place like this, where god only knows what has been dropped on that floor the 5 second rule drops to about .5 seconds. Especially when it was coated in BBQ sauce :) |
Thanks! You can be sure that every trip I take will have a picture book to follow. |
Do you guys work around here? I live in Bend but work in Redmond, and you all look really familiar. Arfcom represent! Last time I was at E3 was 2001.. good times. |
Heh, that's pretty cool...wish I could do something like that. What make is your AR?
Mine is a DPMS Carbine. |

Page 2 and none of the ARFCom resident animal rights activists are harassing you yet?
Wow! "Those rabbits are just doing their rabbit thing... boo hoo hoo..." |
it is a waste, they could of fed my snakes |
Animal Rights. lol |
+53 I wouldn't have even touched the filthy things. Call me crazy but here's one cat that doesn't want tularemia. |
no.. but the rabbit hunters want to know why they did not at LEAST fry one or two? Makes me hungry just looking at the pics, man! TRG |
Cottontails = tasty
Jackrabbits = dogfood or coyote bait That is all. |
oo my god.....r u boring or something??? instead of killing rabbits go to Iraq and kill there terrorists! where is your heart?
wow.. almost got 2 full pages before the 1337 12 year olds started posting. head.gif Thanks for all the chatter on the thread, it was alot of fun and all of us wanted to share it. Thanks D for putting the post together. |
Only a fool would eat a jackrabbit. There's a reason they are considered a pest. They generally carry at least one type of fungus or infection. And I haven't seen one in years that wasn't covered in fleas and ticks.
Gotta practice first |
Yeah, I figured it wasn't long before the trolls started crapping on the thread.
And people think Islam is the only hokey ancient religion in the world. |
He thinks shooting terrorists is better than shooting rabbits, and you make shots as his religion? WTF is wrong with you? Do any of you people ever get out of your little section of the world and try to open your eyes? Stop and think about differences in culture, what an embarassment some of you are. |
