has any thied one of these yet and what is your thoughts on a smooth handguard

Haven't tried one, but have a roll of carbon fiber in the garage I've been dieing to do something with....

Have no personal experience shooting with one, but a lot of competetive shooters use them (3 gun and carbine matches). They say that the smooth surface keeps their weapons "snag-free" on the barricades.

Mostly use PRI tubes.

Il ike the Armalite Fiberglass free float which align well and have the swivel stud built in.
