My, how time flies!
after 20 years, the M16 hasn't changed that much, which is a testament to its design Thanks for sharing! |
That’s what I thought as I read the article. Some items that stand out are: They refer to the replacement of the FH lock washer with the peel washer, mentioning that the peal washer provides for adjusting the FH timing to suit LH’ed or RH’ed shooters. This is the first I’ve heard of this. The first 2,000 M16A2’s were delivered to the military with the older style ejection port cover. The FA was never removed by Colt on the A2 simply because it was never requested. The optic used in the article is a Steiner 4x24 NATO scope mounted on a ARMS Swan mount! I never knew the ARMS company went back that far. |
I remember reading in either the -10 or -23P that an armorer could adjust the comp for left or right hand shooters. Although I never never seen it happen. |

January of 1985, huh?
That was only a year and 4 months before I was born...... You don't feel old, do you Man that's pretty cool. WIZZO |
Na........I was 18 at the time, and according to Frau Quib I'm still 18! |
I thought the "A look at the army's idea for the M16A3" was wierd; I'm glad they didn't really look like that!
Dang! You guys are youngen's. That was a month after my 25th birthday.
Thanks for the post Quib! I remember that issue. Bought it and read it. But my copy is looonnng gone. |
I was tight end on the jr. football team and 3rd base on the jr. baseball team!
ARMS just had their 25th anniversary. |
Thanks for your service to our country CD. I’d LOVE to see what pics you have that are allowed to be posted! Sometimes I wish I had went your route in stead of going aviation. |

I bought my First AR15 in 1976 , and I was over 21yrs. old. JEBUS , now I feel F***in OLD Oh Well |

The kids coming out and posting on here are making me feel old....
I'm (still) too young to feel old ! |
Great stuff. I still love the M16A2. That's what I learned on, and it always just feels right to me. Gotta get one one of these days.
doesnt that guys hair look awful long for being in the service?
I think he was part of the magazine staff testing the rifle for the article, not military.
He's either National Guard(OLD SCHOOL) or a pencil pusher, either way that is way to long. |
Hey looks just like an old AR I used to have...complete with my Steiner OD version and ARMS STANAG
Mount.. Steiner had some seriously thick cross hairs...probably should have kept it though.... Sold to someone on ARFCom as I recall...bout four or five years ago... -'85 eh...my youngest daughter born back then... |
Ah, I knew you were a youngster. |
Very Cool.
I was 11 at the time with 6 uncles who were enlisted. I recall one being very excited about the M16A2 while another, who had fought in Korea and Vietnam called anything M16 related "the biggest piece of shit weapon ever made" Funny how that works |
What a blast from the past, I actually remember reading that article! Thanks for sharing!
All okay except for the long stock and the uncomfy pistol grip. Why did they do that?!
Ask member Coldblue. |
I have that issue. Proposed M-16A3: what naivete!
What it points out to me is the unacceptable stagnation in firearms design. |
I still have that issue of SOF, and looked at it maybe a month ago.
I didn't always agree with Kokalis, but he and I shared an admiration for that weapon that I feel to this day. If I had to live with only one AR, it would be my Colt 20" A2. |
I remember TRYING to convince my dad to buy an M16.. At that time in my state you could own TitleII if you were " qualified" ie. govt employee.. My dad was a university prof. so he fit the bill.. Couldnt convince him to spend the 1200 ( inc. the xfer tax).. Later laws changed in our state so anyone is " qualified" I picked up my M16 last month, he damn near had a heart attack when I told him what it cost, and after I reminded him what they were back then.. Just shook his head...
ETA: Buyin 'em new in '85.... Wow.... Where is that time machine... |
I just pinned on E-5 rank at Campbell, was an Infantryman in charge of a unit supply room. All my friends got hooked up on supplies. I was still an expert with an M16 that had triangle hand guards and my issue pistol was an M1911A1. I always qual'd expert with every weapon I was issued.
5 months later I met the future ex Mrs. Ryan, ETS out of the Army Jan 86, had a daughter a month later and divorced a year after that. I had a subscription to SOF in the Army and the mail guy would read them before I got them. Peter Kokalis is a very nice guy. I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times and talking shop. |
Wow. I had that issue. I remember my young 20 year old ass tooling around NTC in Jan 85 freezing my butt off in the high Mohave Desert during our Bde's 30 day rotation...........
That's a USMC hat and sleeve roll. As prevously posted, guy's just dressing up. Makes me want to buy an A2. |
Good times...I was born on that exact month and year too...things sure have changed.
The only thing that gets me is the "thicker barrel at muzzle prevents bending" |
Wearing the old poplin cammies. |
I bought that issue at the PX, I think.
I remember being excited about a new improved M16. I saved it for many years, but it got ruined in the "Great flood of '93" My basement flooded, I threw out lots of good gun rags. |
God I loved those poplins(ripstop to the younger, less saltier guys). Most comfortable uniform ever. I was in the Corps at the time, hated the switch over to the A2. Stock was too long, didn't like the handguards(while shooting with the sling), and there was nothing wrong with the A1 sights. I remember laughing at the guy's hair in the photo, and the inferring of him being a Marine. Edited because I forgot the pos pistol grip. |
