The 5.56 can withstand higher pressures, allowing a higher velocity than the .223. Difference in caliber width is extremely miniscule.

But big enough to be extremely dangerous in the right conditions. Firing 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber can be devastating. Generelly it is not an issue, but I'd hate to find out. |

I would have to say Safetyhit and Mongo001 hit it dead center.
Generaly same exact round except the 5.56 NATO chamber will withstand higher pressures for a little more velocity. At least that is my understanding of differences between the two. Although I am not up to date on this chamber , I think there is one in between those two called the Wilde chamber , it falls in between the .223 and 5.56 NATO chambers I believe. Just dont shoot me if i am mistaken on that Wilde chamber. I never had one chambered to that so if I am wrong about the Wilde chamber , I will surely be corrected shortly and will learn sumtin new today. |

The difference is in the throat and lead angle (where the bullet is in the chamber). A tighter .223 chamber can set back the bullet in a 5.56 cartridge. Since 5.56 runs at a higher pressure to begin with, a setback bullet in a 5.56 cartridge can KABOOM a rifle. While generally this isn't an issue, it has been in the past.

So its best for me to get a 5.56 chamber in my rifle even if i might rarely shoot mil ammo? The "miniscule" difference won't matter with the 5.56 shooting the .223 right? Gotta make sure before I buy my upper.

A barrel with a 5.56 chamber will shoot .223 just fine.

Totally unrelated but www.ammo-oracle.com is a very informative site though it took me about 2 hours to read all of it but it did answer alot of questions I had. I'd recomend anyone that wants to learn about .223/5.56 ammunition read it.

Yes, it is 5.56. Everyone (.223 cal only rifles) should not shoot it. Like Mongo says, it can potentially be dangerous in a .223 only chamber. The key word is "potentially", as I have never had or seen this problem first hand. But I have not pushed my luck, either. |

It's all just hysteria.....
My .223 chambered barel shoot's NATO 5.56 surplus with no real problem (in fact it is pretty accurate) as long as I keep the chamber clean. And only then do they become harder to extract manualy. As I do not shoot semi-auto i cannot comment on the facts relating to that. This said i'd go for a 5.56 chambered rifle to ease any concerns. Taffy |
