I have a family member who is putting together a gun and is on a limited budget. This will be his only gun.

A safe is out of his reach $$ and not practical.

Ideas ?

A cable through the magwell and then locked to something unmovable or breakable. You can bolt something to the floor to anchor it to, but destroy the head with a grinder after installation so it can't be removed.

Yes it could still be stolen, but if you make it difficult enough they might give up.

Don't put it together until you are going to use it.

Keep the lower kit in the sugar bowl, the stock under the couch, the lower behind the toilet tank....

Stack On sells an 8 gun( I would not call a safe) safe for around $100. That may be out of reach right now but it is a good deal. I realize that it can be gotten into but would take some major effort. Mine is bolted to floor and wall. I don't want to damage mine but I am curious if anyone has ever had to get in one(lost key). How hard was it?

Ducts, probably yhe air return for some thing this big. The atic, push up the sheet rock cover deal and the lift up a peace of insulation, put the AR under there.

If he wants to use it for HD, I'd say throw it under the matress every morning.

Bury it under the garden but don't water the plants.

I had a medium duty safe and the burglars still drilled and got it opened.

Now I have a heavy duty 1/4 inch thick drill resistant safe.

If a safe is truly out of his reach, his only option for such a weapon is to keep it within line of sight 24/7 or lovingly held in grasp. That is my most humble opinion.

I must say that an AR would be a serious financial hit for most folks, even for the well-to-do, that's just in the loss of the weapon itself... My greater fear is what would a scum bag that would steal such an implement wish to do with it

Remember, in life there's concealment and cover. Both in how you store your weapons and how you employ them. Cover can be concealment, but concealment is not cover.

In the closet behind the extra sheets and towels. The handgun goes in a plastic bag in the bottom of the partially full trash can.

The problem is all the other stuff to big to hide around a small apartment.
When the burglars find the rucksack, LCE, Interceptor vest, the 3,000 rounds in the closet, all the full magazines, BDU's, kevlar helmet, etc. they're gonna tear the place apart looking for the weapons.

Duct tape. Duct Tape is the best and most practical. Oh wait I forgot to mention the dog. Ok get him a big dog like a Rotty or a Pit and then duct tape the rifle to the dog.

Actually if you have a old couch you can hollow it out and place a piece of plywood between the cusions and the hole.

You can get at least 3 ARs in a small couch.

Before we had a safe we used to fold em up in the hide a bed in the couch. Worked great.

I use to do this a long time ago before I had a safe.

Take it apart and put it under the drawer under your stove. Never seen a thief remove the drawer to look under one.

Wrap it in a towel to keep it clean.

Hide it or get one of those stack-on cabinets, and then hide the stack-on cabinet in the garage or something, under a bunch of old shit.

Like somebody else said, if they can't find it, they can't take it.

About 3 years ago...

A guy in Saint Petersburg, FL shot himself. He kept a loaded weapon under the seat of his chair. He was an overweight fellow. He sat down one night, and the 45acp fired. Bullet went through his thigh. He died shortly. (must have hit major blood vessel).

That kind of sucks.

I would say if he cannot afford a safe and he doesn't have a good spot to hide it then just make sure his renters/homeowners insurance covers gun theft. If it doesn't then get some, it is pretty cheap.
