Which style would it be?
I bet this has been posed before, but I don't know the results. ETA Sorry about the confusion. By carbine, I do mean carbine gas system and handguard. By recce, I do mean the mid length gas system on a carbine 16 inches or less. By midlength, I mean the gas system on a carbine. |
my first was a carbine because it looked so cool. I mean UGLY |
I am building a recce,
(And barring one piece it is assembled) And I must say, the more I play with it the more I like it. |
I just returned from testing my most recent build: a RR 1/9 chromelined midlength with Aimpoint. It was the shitznit. I threw a scope on it at the 60 round mark. With a hot barrel, I averaged five shot groups of 1 1/4" at 50 yards and that was without freefloat handguards.
I've built several carbines, but I like the mid length a lot more for the longer sight radius and smoother running. |

For a 1 gun "All Arounder"?...imnsho?...nuth'in beats a well tuned 5.56/.223 M4 Type CARBINE....light to carry, compact, fast-handling yet plenty accurate and effective out to 300 meters or so....which makes the M4 type CARBINE my top pick.

I'd have a RECCE carbine with a midlength gas system. Too bad it's not a poll choice.

Rifle. Extra volocity, better sight radius, less recoil than a carbine, and a longer range. As far as length is concerned, it isn't as long and cumbersome as people say it is. I must admit, the carbine does have a better "feel" to it. It depends more on your needs than our opinions. If you will never shoot more than 200 yards, if you want to clear rooms easily, and you want it really light, get the carbine. If you plan on shooting longer distances, want to double tap easier, want a longer sight radius for more accuracy, and don't mind a little extra wieght, get a rifle.

A Barrett Model M468-LE Select Fire 6.8 mm SPC Rifle (CAR stock model).

An SBR which I am unsure if it should go under carbine which implies a 16" or M4 style carbine.
To be even more specific a Leitner Wise piston driven carbine. It has the best set of features for my use which is intended for LE/self defense use. It can be used or deployed from an automobile the best. Its the best indoors for maneuverability. It has low recoil, wont spit gas in your face with a suppressor, is more relibale and longer lasting than a standard carbine, etc. As fas as velocity? For self defense or LE use a barrel longer than 11.5" is not needed. I only use 75 grain OTM so a 50+ yard fragmentation floor is far enough that will never be an issue. The longest sniper shooting in the US was under 150 yards if I am not mistaken. It was a head shot and the SBR is capable of making that shot as well with the appropriate, quality barrel. To me anything longer is dedicated for hunting or military use and is unecessarily long and bulky with no real benefits for the LE/self defense role or your state does not allow SBR and you are stuck with 14.5" with perm flash hider or 16" carbines which is a distant second choice. PS: An AR is not an AR if its select fire guys. |

Rifle
Especially an SP1 or M16a1 clone. Barrel length and performance of a rifle with the weight of a carbine. |
I only have one AR, so I can definitely answer....
16" Bushy HBar. Magpul stock. Larue Carbine length ras. Larue BUIS as the rear sight. Las/Tac Laser.... just for bling/impress the friends Very light, but can sustain long strings of fire well. Have a good one. S |
If I only had one AR, I would have to buy at least one more.
Seriously though, I woudl get a 16" mid-length. BTW, your poll doesn't really make sense. It's difficult to tell whether you're referring to gas systems, bbl lengths, or rifle styles. |
16" midlength. I used to favor the 20" A2 but this Cav upper has won me over. Mine is setup with a YHM freefloat rail and and flip up buis topped with an Eotech 512. Love it, my favorite rifle ever.

Just got off the scale.... Stainless and his rifle are 253. Just Stainless is 244. So yes, you are right... prob around 9 pounds. This thing, to me, is a million pounds lighter than its last "configuration"... 20" Hbar, Troy rifle ras. etc etc. Hell, i think i even posted about it.. "Help, i have a 13 pound AR" I think that was the topic. |

Well, It's almost a toss-up for me.
The middy beats out a 20" A2 w/gov't profile by a hair. WIZZO |
I did edit to clarify the question, but I could not edit the poll directly. ETA Sorry about the confusion. By recce, I do mean the mid length gas system on a carbine 16 inches or less. By midlength, I mean the gas system on a carbine. The overwhelming response has been for a carbine over a rifle. I can see the wisdom of using a midlength gas system with a midlength or rifle length hand guard. |

Other:
My next build, an A2 Dissy with collapsing stock. No Expert |
My vote is carbine........just good all around in my opinion.
Rifle. I like the longer sight radius and more bullet speed. It's not that heavy or awkward.
But I'm glad I can have the rifle and the carbine too. |
My only AR is a Bushmaster A2 carbine w/ a heavy barrel, birdcage supressor, bayo-lug, foregrip w/rail, and a 6 pos. Bushmaster stock. I'm satisfied with it. It's accurate, reliable, and darn sexay. But, if I could change it, I'd have it be a flattop so I can put more trinkets and baubles on it.

What does the middle one do the left one does not? |

Colt LE6920 with an ACOG and a can.
Didn't we just have this thread last week? |
No.1 Balances perfect. No.2 Extends the frag range of 5.56 a bit.... Back up off me zombies! and No.3 It gives me wood, caus its so pretty. |

Well, I only have one so it would be it . Bushy A2 rifle. But, I do have pieces of a xm177ish franken carbine I am ever so slowly putting together.
Id take you out like Tuesdays trash after you burned up all 5 rounds you have. |
The 6.8 mm should not be too bad like my 7.62 X 39 mm AKs, SKS, .308 and 30-06 M1 Garand. Well this is just a "What if" thread but I'm really planning on building another brand 6.8 mm SPC upper/ rifle when the ammo is more available. Most dealers are saying they should have plenty of 6.8 mm ammo by October. I'll have to wait and see if what they say is true. Maybe I'll get a case or two by then. |

A3 16" carbine with a rifle length JP FF tube and a collapsable stock - Aimpoint on the rail.
However, I recently built a 20" flattop upper with an A1 pencil barrrel, 1/12 twist, with a Accuracy Speaks ff tube. It's a great rifle to shoot, balences well for me and is not too heavy. |
One vote for the Rifle : Formerly a Bushmaster A2 hbar reprofiled by Kurts Kustom Firearms cut to an 18 inch government profile barrel w/A2 flash hider. Equipped with a RockRiver 2 stage trigger. Lightweight , longer than a 16 , higher velocity than a 16 and better looks than an m4 . Damn accurate and it's my rifle !
CArbine. Light bullets , light rifle. Why add all the extra weight for such a small bullet.? It was designed for light weight to start with.
If I could only have one... It would be a AR15A1....... Light accurate and reliable.. What Eugene Stoner wanted in his teams design....... WarDawg
