Olyimpic Lower.
The magwell is extremely tight. is there something i can do to loosen it up a bit? or is it one of those things where i just have to deal with it? |
On my stag lower, a 20rd mag is tight, but a standard 30 is fine, so you might try a different mag.
Every Olympic Arms MFR model Ive owned was picky when it came to mags...
Might be the mags, depending on how tight it is...it might loosen up some after inserting/removing the mags a few times if it is the lower.
Swing down the winter trigger guard then try again. Mine was tight till I realized the tgigger guard was rubbing against the magazine, had to dremel an shave a bit off the side facing the muzzle. It wasn't the trigger guard itself, it's Oly's out of spec receivers's holes that place the trigger guard more forward than it should

My RRA lower is like that, My NHMTG 20rd mags stick but my Bushy 20 rounders, Colt and NHMTG 30 rounders slip in and out just fine. Both my STAGs and my DPMS lowers like everything.
+1 I have one from 2003 that is purple and it has a tight magwell (Ser#47XX). It's guaranteed that the mags will fit and funtion well in my other AR's, but this is usually the only one to give me any grief with mags. WIZZO |

You need to get a file and file out the mag well some. I allways check to make sure all of my mags will drop free from a new lower, if not I take the upper off (depending on what area needs releaving remove the bolt hold open)lay the lower on a table and file a little on each side till your mags are loose.
Oh yea, have you tried it with the upper pivoted over? Some times the mag catch is to high and they bottom out before they catch. |
oly's notorious for tight magwells. Try different mags and if it's still too tight give them a call and send it back.
I've got a 2005 oly lower............ No problems............. |
The really frustrating part is not only do they know that their mag wells are tight, but they actually take pride in that fact. They act like they are somehow the mark of a super accurate rifle, and all the other manufacturers are putting out loose, out of spec. junk. |

Like a fat woman thinking her being fat is a feature, not a defect?
Watch your tongue boy... I like my chicks chubby! |
file out the mag well? You have got to be kidding. send the lower back to Oly and have them replace it. |
I've never seen that on any board.... |
Use USGI or Colt mags only, they should work fine. Also the brit parkerized steel mags drop free. With my Oly, the Bushmaster or no name blue steel mags are tight too. USGI and Colt mags are better anyway. |
Good god man, Someone might think your serious |
Do NOT do that! If you have ruled out the mags as being a problem, contact Oly Arms and have them take care of it. |
They are new USGI mags. NIW
New lower, bought in 2003. labled as such 2003.
This is my first experiance with a tight magwell. Very frusterating considering i have an older Olympic SGW lower that accepts all mags.
I, in the last few days, refinished te lower with Teflon\moly. Will this void any warranty? |

What ser# range is yours in?
I bought mine EARLY 2004 and it had 2003 on it so it might have been towards the end to the manufacturing lot. WIZZO |
Why not flie it? its a hunk of soft metal 20 seconds and its fixed or god knows how long if you send it back and they could just tell you its within spec and tough titty. hey you could just put the mag in about 1000 times that shoud do it. I have a Oly lower from 2003 or 2002 and it is tad tight but it is on a target rifle so I don't really care much. I just checked the lower and my mags. 1 mag a Adventure line mfg. is the offending mag it is 2.535" x .875"compared to another Adventure line mag that is at 2.510"x.875" I also have a Universal mag that is a 20 rounder and is 2.530"x.875" and it drops free just fine anyway good luck |

Triumph,
Please check and do what Duffy suggested. My department had several new Colts that appeared to have tight mag wells. It was just the forward part of the trigger guard. A few strokes of the file on a cheap part, the trigger guard (not the lower receiver!!!!) was all it took to have things up and running as they should. |
I pulled down the trigger guard and inserted a mag. it is still very tight. trigger guard is not touching the mag.
I don't know? hmmm, maybe it would remove the hard anodizing surface and weaken the structure of the receiver? What the hell do I know? |
Bought a Bushy after the ban that I thought was tight. Actually, I measured the magwell and it was at the minimum in spec. After some investigation, I determined it was the GI mags I was using. I was amazed at how different each one was; even from the same manufacturer. In my case my Colt 20s worked fine but other GI 30s were the problem. Go figure. I now take my rifle with me when I buy mags. By the way, My Bush mags worked just fine.
Did you get the coating on the inside of the magwell? How thick is the coating? |
I doubt very much made it into the magwell. my fingers were in the magwell when i sprayed the receiver. |
And Colt and USGI mags did not drop free before you moly coated, right? Then I would call Oly and try to get warranty replacement before too much time passes. You know they have a 30 day money back guarantee policy, no questions asked, right? |

Its been alot longer than 60 days. I bought this lower in 2003 and just kept it around till i built up my rifle. |
they have a lifetime warranty |

My Oly magwell is tight too but I've found that USGI Center or Okay mags fit fine, almost all others are too tight.
I was given a box full of the steel British mags and they're all too tight to go in. They fit in my Stag lowers (won't drop free however) but I coudln't even get them in the Oly without using what I felt was excessive force. I called up Oly and they had me measure the magwell and I found out that the magwell as measured by me is on the small end of the spec but still within the tolerances given (I didn't take Oly's word for the specs but looked them up myself). The Stag is about in the middle of the spec. This is the first I've heard someone mention that Oly is "proud" that their magwells are on the small end of the spec. I know they're proud that they hold close tolerances and don't vary much from part to part. I "touched up" the Brit mags on a belt sander and repainted them and now they're fine. |
My Oly has a tight magwell too, but I only learned that when I purchased mags from Taiwan. It liked La Belle and even SA80 mags just fine.
Still, Oly will service a weapon for a lifetime so no worries. A phone call should sort you out. Oly's Customer service is quite good |
Same deal with my MEGA. 20 rounders will not drop free. 2 of my USGI 30 rounds are alittle tight and then all 7 of my colt mags and 1 bushmaster mag are perfect. 20 round colt is very tight. |
My Oly/SGW stopsign lower has a tight magwell. All USGI mags that I've tried do work. It only sticks on Thermolds. This Thermolds were issued to me back in 88' so only use them in my Colt M4s. I got to remember to try the HK mags in my Oly.

that is crazy talk of course it will remove some of the anodizing but weaken the receiver you would have to file more that the little clean up burr removel I had in mind. to each his own I wouldn't worry about messing up my receiver with a file if this was my problem other people may not like the sound of that whatever send it back try different mags single load rounds ya know whatever works for ya |
You were "in mind" referring to removal of a burr? Sorry, but I'm not a mind reader. I do though, have first hand experience with the OLY "tight" mag-well lowers... I never, ever, seen one that had a "burr". They all were just undersized mag-wells |
