I hae anywhere from 1/2"  to 1 1/2" groups at 100. What should I expect at 200? They seem to be opening way up like to 6" or more

That's kind of like asking, "how long is this piece of string?"  It depends upon a variety of factors.  Why don't you give us a little more info?

Well, let's pretend you are shooting something with 2 MOA.  That would be a 2 inch group
at 100 yds and a 4 inch group at 200 yards roughly.

6 inches at 300 yards,
8 inches at 400 yards, etc.

But in general, the group size is going to about double every 100 yds.

In your case, there is more going on.  Are you shooting heavy bullets out of a slow twist barrel?
Need more info on your weapon and ammo......
Are the holes nice and round, or are they keyholing?
How long is the barrel?

at best double every hunderd yards.
they can be a lot worse.
stance.
eyesight
optics.
the kind of rest.
and trigger control all play a part in ruining rifle accuracy.

As noted above you need to provide substantially more information than you have.

Is this rifle scoped or are ya using irons?

Are you shooting an SBR, 14.5”, 16”, 20” or 24” barreled rifle?

What kind of fodder are ya using?

And especially; how far is a yeard?

All this matters in context to your query and it’s like me answering you with “hell my rifle will place 5 rounds inside 4” at 800 yards”; (which it will, btw, and saying nothing else).

Mike
ps - this rifle is a Leupold Mil-dot scoped, Krieger custom barreled 700, 27" in 1/10 twist pitchin 175 grn. SMKs, (which makes the statement above much more believable, don't-cha-think........... )

Any fundamental mistake you may be making will be magnified by distance as well.

Conservative estimate: If you shoot 3" groups at 100 yd, you will probably be shooting 6"-9" groups at 200 yd.

With this set-up and a bullet which it likes your groups should hold 1/2 MOA (which is 1/2" at 100 yards) out to at least 500 yards and possibly further, (IN GOOD AIR!).

IMO the 1/12 twist will relegate you to using lighter weight rounds than I do with my CR6724 1/9" twist rifle (which are 77grn. SMKs), but Sierra makes Matchkings in the 52 grn. weight which should hold much tighter groups than the Walmart value-box 45grn. HPs your currently using.

As to whether your 1/12 will be quick enough to hold good groups with the 69 grn. SMKs in use by Federal Gold Medal or Black Hills match rounds only testing will tell ya that.......

That said I'd be shooting the heaviest round possibly for your twist rate that groups well within MOA out to at least 500 yards. (understand the faster the twist rate the heavier bullet your barrel will shoot, normally 1/12 twist will shoot up to 63 grn bullets, but as it's a Krieger I'd darn sure try a box of Fed GM 69grn SMKs just to see if they will group)

Mike

ps - if you reload, ya might want to throw a few "red-line" 69grn. SMK loads through it, as sometimes a barrel (like mine) will group the heavier rounds IF their moving at max velocity, (BE CAREFUL with this advice and WATCH for pressure sign as you progress with the hotter loads)

Have not tried heavier bullets yet because I wanted something for a 40-55gr bullet for varmints.  I was waiting to get better consistant groups @ 200 before trying but I guess I should try some now. AT least that can rule out slight winds.

AM not set up for reloads yet...someday. Could be just me eyes at 200. Its tuff to get a good sight picture. I am using redfields sight in targets. I think I could use a better bull to see so I know my sight picture is the same on each shot.

Well I only have shot when the winds were 0-10 max. Even then I wait til it stops or slows. I would call it a breeze, not wind.
