Inspired by a thread in the Handguns section asking the question of how accurate everyone is with their 1911.  I thought I'd ask here for real examples of targets you have shot to get some kind of idea where I stand accuracy wise with my AR.  I'm more of a pistol shooter than a rifle shooter so I'm expecting better results from the others on this board.

Here are my targets shot with an Olympic Arms S.S. 1:9 heavy barrel at 100 yards using 55 gr FMJ plinking ammo with A2 iron sights. (Sorry it's a little fuzzy.)

Top, left is two groups of 5 before and after a sight change.
Top, right is sitting with sling (The sling pulled the group right and I think varying sling pressure caused big changes in impact point.)
Bottom, right is 5 off the bench and 3 crosslegged sitting and 3 straight leg sitting with out the sling.  (I called the one to the upper right as a bad shot.)
Bottom, left is 10 off the bench.  (Very first target of the day.)

On average I'm running about 3 inches for a five shot group off the bench and 4inches for the 10 shot first target of the day.  Should I expect more?  Is it time to break out the match ammo to find improvement?

Let me see how you shoot.

I can kill you at 200 yrds no problem. I think that is accurate enough With 55gr plinking ammo about 3" is perfectly fine. Match ammo should cut the groups in half.

Accurate enough.

Reg old sights on a AR right around a couple of inches at best, the gun can do better I can't. With my 308 Garand under an inch on a good day [NM .62 sights and bedded and all] [THAT is benched solidly and I can't do that sitting or whatever. and it is a NM camp perry gun nothing I put together my others are 4 or 5 inchers with me shooting]  Not all days are good days tho. Damn coffee, yeah, thats what it is.........

Offhand with irons I tend to shoot about minute of paper plate with most of my ARs. I'm a tad better with optics offhand, and can generally shoot minute of skunk with an ACOG and a taclight in the dark.

Shooting prone with a bipod/rest or benched I'm much better of course, but my rifles are still generally more accurate than I am.

My scoped 20" A2 HBAR is the most accurate rifle I own, and will shoot sub MOA all day long if I do my part.

I can almost everytimehit a CD Rom at 100 yds with irons.....from a benchrest.....prone offhand I can usually hit an 8x10" target...if I don't flinch too much at 100yds with irons.....I can definately get minute of muthafucker everytime!

With my M4gery using iron sights I can put shots inside of a 12” target at 100m. Head shots at 100m are no problem using the EOTechs 1MOA dot. At 39 years old my eyes are not what they used to be, might be a good excuse to tell Mrs. Quib when I start building an SPR!

A couple of weekends ago I did 10 shot 1 MOA groups at 100 yds with my RRA M4 everytime with 55 gr FMJ.  I'm very pleased how well it shoots + 20 years of DCM/CMP matches have worked for me.

That's right...I can hit a man-sized target at a reasonable range.  That's what it's for.

If I wanted long-range accuracy, I'd be using a Barret 50.

These are from a 16" Rock River with National Match Trigger. both shoot at 100 yards.   The ammo is noted on each photo.

Hit soda cans all day @ 100 yrds with irons sights.....

Of course better with any scoped AR.

Just a naturally accurate rifle, given the shooter using it.

I asked basically the same question about accuracy in this thread:

ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=244101

That day at the range I was getting about 8" groups with irons. 8"-12", or minute of pieplate for me is average.

I have a WOA NM upper w/ Wilson Barrel that shoots pretty well with my "developed" handloads.  5 shot groups with a scope on top of a carry handle, shot off sandbags run 1/2 to 3/4".  I have shot quite a few 1 to 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with the irons this year from prone w/ sling.  I had one 5 shot groop this year at 200 yards that was 1 1/4" (irons, prone).  I saved THAT target.    My 200 yard sitting groups generally run about 5-6".  We won't talk about offhand tonight. At least they are all scoring on the high power targets now.

My scoped WOA SPR upper isn't quite as accurate, but is still sub-MOA.  Still looking for a good load for it.

With a 16" Bushmaster I can keep them in a paper plate-offhand at 100 yards, IF I don't wory about speed more than I wory about accuacy.  No problem from squating or prone.  I need to work at 200 yards.  I don't have any tack driving ARs.

My trigger sucks right now, and I am a bit unsteady on the bench. However,

using 40 grain Black Hills B-Tips, I get 20 shots groups of about 1.5+ MOA.

Using 52 grain match Black Hills, I'd get about 3/4 MOA groups, assuming I do my thing.

This is a 20" HBAR free-float with a Mueller Tactical (ugh!) 16x on top.

I'm still learning.

Yep.  That's the furthest I've reached with irons too.  "Targets!"

With a Barrett with a scope have hit targets at 1700 meters, but the target was a rusted out tank hulk.

I can shoot a 2.5" group at 25 yards offhand without a sling, shooting coat, etc., using iron sights.

Prone at 100 yards I can generally hit a 12" diameter circle with a leapers 4x scope.

Using sandbags to support the rifle on a bench, I can do about 1.5" at 100 yards with a leapers 4x scope.

Personally, I think benchrest is cheating.

This is why I asked for targets.  Assuming the shooter is honest about the conditions under which the target was shot, the target doesn't lie.

I am of the same mind.  I think benchresting is cheating as well, since there are no benchrests in the wild.  However, if I can't hit the target off the rest I'm never going to hit it offhand.  I included the gruops I shot sitting for that reason.  It's not off the rest, but at least I can make a reasonable (pleasing) group sitting.  I didn't include my offhand target because only 6 of 10 shots made holes in the paper.

Shit, I could punch pencil holes in a target, snap a pic of them and tell you the target was at 3,000m!       The only true way to tell how accurate someone is with their weapon, would be to see them fire in person.

That is one of the scary things about  starting to shoot Highpower.  There are no do-overs, and everyone can see your target.  I see a definite difference in my scores between practice and matches.  There are nerves involved, and the distraction of other people shooting a couple feet away from you.

I just started shooting Sporting Rifle/High power.  I have shot two matches.  I have not missed the paper yet out of 64 rounds. I can shoot a tight pattern off a bench, but that is only good for sighting in you rifle.  It is very intense shooting for score under a timed event with other shooters on the line, espcially when your first shot is for score, there are no practice shots, warm up ect. Give it a try and it will let you know where you are at with your shooting and equipment.
.

I shoot a RRA A2 lower and a Bushmaster A2 flattop upper, I just have a cheap Leapers 3x9 ar scope.  Also I just have a standard trigger, no two stage on anything, which would be a big help.

I use a 20" colt A2, it's stock except for a trijicon front sight, I practice diff positions while moveing and stationary, and I've been shooting for about 25yrs. 200 yds is the max I shoot out to and I can constantly hit a man size target. Most of my practice is closer tho.
