14" steel plate at 340 yards pretty much every time with a Wilson 16" 1/9 bbl and a Stag lower. From kneeling position. Less often with Wolf ammo.

200 w/ a 16" is nothing. Guys can hit targets at 600yrds with carbines. Not me though. I am blind as a bat

12 inch steel plate at 600 yards ( rifle was bench rested though, so it kinda doesn't count, off hand it would be hard given the light weight of my carbine) 14.5 inch barrel with Trijicon TA01-NSN.

I have consistantly got hits out to 600 yards with a 16inch 1/7 LMT not too tough and far from outside of its range.Mansize targets easy at that distance but i would always grab a 308 given the range for any serious application.

If your talking about a bulls eye with out a scope. Ive dont it at 600 with a ar15 20inch barrel. I got lucky i think i did it 5 times with 50 rounds. (bulls eye is 4inchs wide)

I compettied in the All Army Service Championships earlier this year (stock service rifle, irons only). I was the only one who shot a M4 against M16s out to 500 yds. I still had no problem hitting a full silhouette from the prone unsupported once I figured my come ups and adjusted for the winds. Ammo used was MK 262.

M4gery, 14.5 with a phantom
500 yards, 24 inch plate repeartedly once i found the comeups, it is at the 600 meter mark on the sight where they actually make 500 yard hits, i do not know how effective that would be, but it is cool, took some practice too 500 is cake with a 20 inch barrel |

Zeroed at 300yds prone supported. Then used 18 clicks for my come up. I did this repeatedly over a weeks span. CD |

I dont use my carbine past 100yds as well below that is whenre Ill most likely use it 90% of the time if the need arose.I can hit good out to 300 yds with my M14/art2 scope.I think eventually though the 14 is gonna get shrunk for close in scenarios..then Ill take that to a carbine class...with a mcmillan M14 side folder and tha barrel cut to 16" it will be an M14 carbine.And with a scope a nice compact sniper system out to at least 500 yds.

Splashed several prarie poodles at laser measured 188 yds and 175 yds a coupla weekends ago.. 16" Model 1 SS CAR A3 with 6 power scope.. and two coyotes who came to the call within a hundred were no problem.. guess it would work on steel too, but you shoot what you have....Les

You know those water coolers that are about 3.5'-4' tall and about 16"-18" wide?
Sitting (no sling) with a standard trigger at the time with my A2-uppered M4gery, I got 20 out of 40 shots to hit with Wolf 55gr on a day with about a 5-10mph crosswind at 400yds (exactly, laser range finder verified). I know I can do better now, but the crops are up. We'll see how well I've progressed since this spring when we get the corn out of the field. WIZZO |

I've shot a 14.5 M4A1 at 800m - the comeup was a bitch (like aiming 45ft up a pine at the end of the range...)
Last year I took the 300m deliberate at our Service Rifle National with a 16" and the 500m winner was a 16" too (In fact the Ag winner was a 16" too) |

Ya know...the 16"er only gives up a tad over 100fps as compared to the 20"er....and at 500meters the 16"er displays less than 7"s more drop as compared to the 20"ers...which ain't much at all...point being...I think many folks out there grossly under-estimate the true ability of the 16"ers....and it's glarringly apparent from the responses here that losing that 4"s off the end DOES NOT automatically and dramatically turn your 500+meter rifle into a nuetered 100 yard carbine...matter of fact?...in the hands of a competent marksmen?....with suitable ammo?....it quite apparent that a 16"er will put dicks in the dirt at 300meters all day long and then some.
 And if any weenies out there wanna take the low road by proclaiming that crap about..... "Yeah Bu, Bu, But at 300 meters the bullet won't frag!!!" then I would simply request that you prove to us just how little they hurt and how ineffective they are by volunteering yourself as a 300 meter target....for just one shot...for instructional purposes only. LOL!!! I didn't think so.  |

It wouldn't frag at 300m from a 20" tube either. Only thing the 20" seems to buy you is a longer sight radius, which is a non-issue of course if you're using an optical sight. |

I am a lousy shot and I can hit the kill zone of a mini-B27 target at 400 yards with mine pictured below. The bullet drop works real well on the ACOG TA11F.

I think the main thing about bragging rights for shooting long range irons with a 16" carbine is that the front site post looks like a friggen 2x4 compaired to the rifle-length site radius. WIZZO |

Prone, unsuported, unknown distance with a 16" LMT FF--I make good hits on silhouette targets to aroung 300m. It gets a lot harder after that. The 55gr el cheapo ammo, 7# trigger and aimpoint kinda made it hard.
I hold them all inside a 8" circle or so at 300 yards known distance using the magazine as a support. With an ACOG I've hit rocks at 5-600m--the scope and that rifles light trigger made a huge difference. ETA: I know that ain't great marksmanship, but its decent considering the configuration and ammo, and I can do those groups fast--three rounds on target in 10 seconds, from standing. |
