Got it from a patient; probably Marine in origin.
Looks factory; has a factory name stamp and a bayonet lug attachment scheme like an M9 bayonet.

The best I can come up with is some enhancement for the M203 grenade launcher...

Any ideas?

By the look of it you're hold it upside down in the first picture.
No idea what it is though... curious.

It's a muffler bearing for a 71 AMC.

Just a wag, maybe it holds wound up line for a line throwing doohickey.

M203 grenade launcher enhancement?    It looks like the ring would go around the barrel, and the other thing near it fits onto the bayonet lug.  Maybe its a stabilizer or increases the range of the grenades...
just a guess

Naw, it looks like a blinker fluid funnel for the 71 AMC.

Looks like a mount for launching rifle grenades.  I don't know for what rifle though.

I dunno

Looks like a parachute flare adapter...or maybe a very ineffective bayonet

Looks like a parachute flare adapter

With current 40mm parachute flares you don't need one, a regular 203 will do. I have no idea what that is though...

Yup...I proudly carried one for three years. (and shot my share of flares)

....I guessed that, because it would be typical to include something like that in a case of flares for those without M203s. I've seen sillier things. (I'm thinking of the manual flares too...not the ones designed for the 40mm)

How they would strike them, I have no idea.

Its a rare cookie cutter that attached to the front of the rifle via bayo lug.
If the dough gets stuck in it, you just shoot it off.

Seriously, got no clue.

Maybe for a grappling hook launcher. Are you sure it's for an AR15/M16?

ETA: Strike that. I know what it is - it's an old Sage Intl mount for a flashlight on a subgun. I just happen to have the complete setup right here...  On the little reinforcement gusset by the bayo lug it says:

"SAGE INTL LTD"

Our NG Armory had a wooden case full of em..
Best i can tell they were for riot control measures...Teargas, Beanbag, rubber pellets or something like that...

Yup, that's what's written on mine "Sage Intl LTD"
All that work for a fricken 2 D-cell flashlight?
"This mounts on a subgun" meaning a 9mm Colt M16?

Yep - 9mm M16. Also, it uses Nicads and is actually fairly bright (nothing like the new stuff though). Surefire has nothing to worry about! They still list it on their website - $203.00!!!

This is what they look like for a regular M16:

No need to appologize - I bought it at a garage sale for $5 a few years back, brand new in the box.  It was made in the 1980's.

I thought it was pretty funny, but cool in a historic kind of way...  What's really funny is that they still have them for sale on their website for only $203.00!!!

ETA: If you think this thing is weird, you should see the laser aiming device that came with my M16 - a genuine gas laser, not some dinky little newfangled diode jobby.
