You dont have to worry about headspacing, the barrel extension is headspaced to the barrel.   It's one piece and does not change when you move the barrel from one upper to another.    You can easily barrel an upper at home if you need to.   There's tons of places to buy uppers.   I bought my last two from RustyTX at www.dsgarms.com

Aim Surplus has the new Stag M-4 uppers for $475, and they include an ARMS 40 buis.  I hope they still have them in stock when I get ready to order.

LMT is pretty good and has lots of options. I got one from Bravo Company on here. You're right that its the barrel extension that is headspaced from the factory-this works as long as you dont use a worn bolt...

Do your self a favor and get a C&R license.  I know it's a pain in the ass,  but  Midway and brownells will give you a healthy discount on DPMS  uppers.  They often have what you're looking for, but when they do the savings can be dramatic,  It's worked for me............Essex

I bought my LMT M4 type 16-inch upper group about a month ago from Legal Transfers at the Equipment Exchange.

I got a free M4 handguard and a RRA charging handle plus free shipping.

You have also the choice of bolt groups, either the RRA or the LMT brand.

He also have RRA uppers and other brands.

They had the best price, quick communications and shipping. You could IM or e-mail him at the EE.
Pete is a great guy to deal with.
