Are the cheapie Taiwan M9 bayonets any good? I am thinking about getting a black spear point one for display and to just to mess around with. For 40.00 I think it might be okay..

You get what you pay for. Go a little more and pick you up a Lan-Cay or an Ontario.

I have a Buck but then bought it when it was cheap, $120. When I find a knife better I'll let you know.
I do have one of the China knockoffs bought for my kid. Its alright after you put an edge on it. Little cheap for the one I bought even had the handle on backwards for mounting on a rifle but was an easy fix. The stone in the sheath is course compared to the buck but then so is the steal so it needs a course stone. Tj |

I have one of those exact replicas....I am not a knife expert, but for 40.00 bucks and a few dollars shipping it is not a bad deal! I have had my knock off for about a year! It has been fairly abused, and held up well!
I would not hesitate to buy another one...Which I just did this week...It should be here tomorrow  Sean |

I liked my M9 Phrobis so much I gave it away. However, if you think it is good looking, for $40 it will make a great display piece. Regardless of what people here would have you beleive, most of them are not running bayonnet drills in their backyard. If you were planning to do such drills, I would recommend the M7 for $25 anyway, as I think it is a better pigsticker.

The Buck M9s problem was it was weak at the threads as it was a 2 pice tang/locking mechanism.The buck is more collectible but I beleive the lan-cay is stronger and then there is the ontario Kbar type made for the marines.Ther was a vendor here that a while back was making his own with better steel and an optinal knuckle handle like the old 1918 trench knives.As far as cheap my motto always is if you need the gear get it,it will do for now and you can always sell it off and upgrade when funds permit.Like my millet red dot I used it until I could afford my aimpoint.

I had a buck almost 20 years ago, wish I still had it. Broke the tip off a tad bit digging in frozen earth though. Now all I use my bayonets for is letter-openers, and not only does it get the job done well, but also it makes opening junk mail alot more fun!
I now have an ontario that I'm pretty happy with, except the green color leaves a bit to be desired compared to what I recall about the Buck. Also, my Ontario does not have the sharpening stone in the sheath or the cute little pouch (bummer) and the retainging strap for the sheath wraps only around the handle of the knife thereby permitting migration in and out of the sheath. The Buck one I had secured the knife diagonally across the handle and the _____, oh, what the hell is that thing called that separates the handle from the blade??? By the way, anyone have comments on that new USMC Bayo, or where to get one for a good price? I get lots of junk mail...... |

The Tiawan made M9 from Medrano is a good M9 copy. $40 ...... I have one and it's well worth what I paid for it. I will say I have NO baynet victims. But it's seems very well made . I have the SS Phrobis style ones. I want to order another one. The sheath is top knotch and as good as the USGI ones I used . I don't think you will be disapointed. I ordered mine from Mr. Suzuki . Got it in two days. Go for it. WD

The Lan Cay M9 is G.I. Issue. Phrobis/Buck are collector's items. It was a short production run and buck mfrd them for phrobis and didn't get paid so buck ended up with the phrobis name and then quit making bayos... sordid tale |

Actually, I have started a new website with all the info I have on the M9 Bayonet:
www.m9bayonet.com I have several M9s and my favorite is the Buck and Phrobis models but I also have a 1st Contract LanCay that is identical in specs to the Buck/Phrobis. The newer knives are made using easier techniques which in turn makes them cheaper... The Taiwan M9s you are describing are actualy pretty nice knives especially if you want one you can use as I know I am not about to play with some of my $100 - $400 knives except to mount on an AR... Just the same, if I wanted a knife to use the Ontario and LanCay M9s are easy to get and priced to make them desireable. A used Phobis or Buck M9 has great steel and sharpens very well! |

So which bayonet for what gun???
M16 through M16-A4 = M(?) bayonet M4 / M4A1 = M9 or M7 bayonet I have zero knowledge about bayonets, but I wouldn't mind adding some to match the rifles. |

AR15/M16 rifles can use either the Vietnam era M7, Current M9, and new USMC M11.
You either have to have a 14.5" Military/SBR rifle barrel, or 20" barrel. For civvies, a 14.5" barrel, with pinned/soldered Phantom FH will get you up to the legal 16". |

What could be a better deal than the going rate of 20 bucks for a mil-spec and mil-issued M7? In my opinion it's much better balanced than the M9. The one I have came with an OD green sheath, it had the number '82' painted on the sheath in some armory, and '82' and 'Mass.' electrostenciled on the blade...I'm sure it will look great on my M16A2 clone, (when it's complete) even if an M9 would be more "modern".
Every AR owner should have an M7; it's a low-cost piece of GI history. |

No, Colt never made M9s but I am pretty sure they made M7s and there are Soligen Bayonets that are marked with Colt on them... Also note Soligen made M7s but they also make a different bayonet that is much more like an AK-47 bayonet that will fit the AR-15. I have seen thi slater bayonet marked with Colt as well...

I have a Colt M7 bayonet made by Eickhorn-Solingen, the blade is marked Colt and it came with a M8A1 Scabbard.
  Here's a Vietnam era M7 also.......... just for kicks!  I still gotta get me one of those new fangled M9's

yeah, they're nice. handle is much more ergonomic, blade is longer, and it's got a nice serrated edge for cutting line. the sheath is ok. it sounds really loud to me when you bump it against something and the elastic toe is a really stupid idea (as is the "sharpener" on the back). much easier to secure to the molle vest though. and it has 2 straps for securing the blade. oh yeah, it has a molded ega so you don't forget who you are!
