Barrels of 8", 10", 11.5"...they may decrease the velocity of the rounds, but at really close ranges (40 meters or less) they still fragment. They just don't fragment out to 100 meters. Correct?

Depends on the ammo and barrel length. 8 inch is a no goo with anything, 10.5 works to maybe 40 with the best ammo.

My understanding is TAP and similar rounds are still very effective out past 50m+ from a 10.5" or 11.5" barrel.  The fragmentation floor is signficantly lower.  I could be wrong though.

No idea, they all go too fast for me to see.

They’re a lot of fun though.

They have their place.  Picture yourself back to back in a Humvee, engaging BGs on either side, which size would you want?  Talking to military and reservists who were issued 20" rifles and had to do just what I said, they, to the man, would have taken anything shorter and most would have wanted an 11.5" Commando type rig to use in situations like that.

They're handy in vehicles. During a carbine class a few months ago we were shooting out of a moving vehicle and the guy with the 11.5" AR had the easiest time moving it out the window or between the door jam.

MK 262 Mod 0, 5.56MM 77 Grain LR Ammunition (Black Hills) is good in the shorty uppers.  1x7 twist required.
