I picked up an AR-15 upper in a trade.  It's a 20" upper that has a silver barrel that looks to be free floated, but has regular A2 handguards on it.  The sling swivel is (strangely) attached to the bottom handguard.  The barrel twist is 1/8.  I assume that this is a "CMP" upper.  If so, what is the advantage (if any) over a normal upper?

Barrel is free floated - external forces, like a sling, will deflect the barrel and affect accuracy.  That is why the sling swivel is on the handguard vs. the FSB, if you sling up tight with the sling on the FSB, you deflect the barrel a small amount and affect accuracy.

Thanks...

Now, why is the barrel silver?  Other than having a FF barrel, what's the advantage to this upper over a standard 20" upper?

The barrel is probably stainless.  Is there a stamp on the barrel around the front sight post?
