I am looking at picking up an AR for collection/appreciation.  What is the best way to store it for long term?

I would like to goto a meat packing plant and have it vacuum packed but that may be a little conspicuous his
Suggestions and/or best practices?

Thanks!

How long term? Do you want to appreciate it in the sense of seeing it a lot?

For looong term storage, I think it's hard to beat cosmoline.

For storage, avoid foam cases like the plague.

Whats wrong with foam lined cases? It holds lubricant right?

Also holds moisture. I've never seen rust on any of my guns, except when stored in foam.

Technobob,

For long term storage you might want to consider a silicone impregnated sleeve. Gunsock is the brand that comes to mind; most gun shops sell something like them. Store the rifle in the warmest, driest place in your home, assuming (and we all know what happens when assuming, lol) you do not have a gunsafe with humidity controls.

I think cosmolene is excessively messy and unnecessary if you plan to use it within the next ten years or so.  If you plan on burying it somewhere however....

For periodic long term storage you may want to try a long plastic bag with a Vapor Moisture Inhibitor or a bag of dessicant dropped into it.  Make sure you get some moisture indicator cards to place with your stored rifles too.
