DPMS makes 7.62 uppers though I checked there site last night and only saw the bolts and barrels advertised, also Model 1 sales sells a 11.5 inch 7.62 upper.  I don't know the quality of either firsthand, but I have heard nothing bad about the DPMs uppers.
DPMS is suppossed to have the 7.62 frankenmags in stock, otherwise I'd say keep your eye out for frankenmags in the EE.  I would think USA mags inc. would be producing frankenmags again, but I havent found any info on how to get ahold of that company.  Also you could make your own mags out the top of the new british mags and the bottom of an AK mag since there both made of steel, and they would be alot better than the USA mags I would think.

Olympic Arms made the origional.

But it's not the upper you need to worry about.

You need: The ar47 lower!!!

I can’t imagine why you want a 7.62x39 set up!

Then you would be simply nonplussed at why I would want two...

ilike9s, I have two (A2 collapsible and flat-top fixed) and love them both.  Both of mine are Colt conversions and work great, but I've heard good things about the DPMS 7.62 parts (no personal experience though).  (FWIW, both of mine have KKF Tac-Brakes on them.)

ETA:  I also have a 5.45x39mm AR (a.k.a. .21 Genghis, by Alexander Arms), and it's a lot of fun too!

I’m just giving him a hard time. ilike9s and I got to shoot an M16 with 10-inch 7.62x39 upper this last weekend, the thing was awesome!

I’m really digging it and thinking about getting a similar setup, but was really watching to see who posted about it first.

IIRC, Dean said he had bought the upper from Model 1, I don’t recall where he said he found the mags, just that they aren’t too common. You might e-mail Dean and see what he has to say. Let me know what you find out.

Thanks a lot Chris you outed me.

That was a blast and 1/2. At least you did not tell them to go to the Oregon hometown forum so the could see the videos, and the infamous full auto reverse shuffle.

I really had a great time shooting with my the fellow forum members.

I still have the FA grin.

Know a good metal man...cut the tops off USA metal AR mags and weld them to AK mags bottom halfs that have the tops cut off them...THE AWB IS DEAD!!!

Colt made/makes (I don't know if it is still made) 7.62 upper.  I have a Colt upper on a RRA lower.  It functions perfectly.  I have 4 35 rd mags and a 75 rd drum.  It is a lot of fun.  Mags will become easier to find with the expiration of the AWB.

Wonder how much more accurate the 7.62x39 is in a ar15 opposed to a ak47.

7.62 would be a nice round if your looking for pentration...

I have a question about the 10-11.5'' uppers. What do you have to do to get them legally? Isn't a rifle with a short barrel illegal?

I know a dealer in Washington State that has a Colt 7.62X39 Upper and 2 mags. If you want the contact info email me.

I noticed it when I visited his shop last week.

SBR it! Get you Form 1(s) from the ATFe and turn it into a Class III weapon.

How much is the fee for that? 200$??

How hard is it to actually get the form to go through? I am just wondering because in the future (at least till next june when I turn 21) I do want to do this. I would like to have a really short ar15.

Good question. I'm not a very good shot. I get about the same grouping with my 16" Colt 7.62 Sporter as with my Bushy 16" .223 CAR. I use cheap Wolf ammo which does not help with my grouping. I think there has been at least one person claiming shot sub-MOA with their 7.62 AR here on the board. Probably with a 20" DPMS upper and expensive match ammo.
Personally I like my 7.62 AR because it’s cheaper for plinking than .223 and comparing with AK, it’s got better ergonomics and less recoil. Seem to me that way at least.

Upper is the easy part (Oly makes a nice one).

It's the magazines that you are going to have issue with.  Well now that the ban is over maybe USA will make more of their hybrid AR/AK magazines so you'll be able to get reliable 7.62x39 hi-cap magazines.  (no joke this was the ONE magazine USA did right).

I remembered this thread this morning and snapped a couple of pictures of my 7.62x39mm ARs:

They are Colt uppers on Mega lowers. (When Mega started making lowers marked "MULTI" I replaced the lowers on all of my non-5.56mm AR "Frankenguns" with these lowers - it always bothered me that the lowers said "5.56mm" while the guns were not that chambering.  It also gave me an excuse to build a half-dozen more 5.56mm ARs on the left-over lowers, of course... )  Like I said in my earlier post, they both have KKF Tac-Brakes (they were both built during the ban) which I like very much - I see no reason to undo Kurt's excellent work now.  I do plan to put a red-dot optic on the flat-top eventually - it just hasn't been a priority.

Troy and the others above make an excellent point about the magazines.  The traditional-looking magazine in my A2 above is the only such that I have found to be reliable - and I have tried a bunch (that one was one of six ordered together and the only one that ran 100% - most I've encountered don't work at all).  The USA "Frankenmags" (like the one in the flat-top above) are the best I have found for more than ten rounds, and I have a bunch of them (20s and 30s).  If ten rounds is enough for you, I have found the plastic MWG mags for 7.62 ARs (sold by DPMS and others) to be utterly reliable.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I also used to have a 20" 7.62x39mm AR - Colt upper on a (5.56mm) Colt lower.  I don't think I have any digital photos of it.  I never much cared for it, but my wife used it (quite effectively) as her deer rifle for a couple of seasons.  (She still hunts white-tail with 7.62x39mm - just out of a bolt-action now, instead of a semi-auto.)

As for the folks saying "Get an AK instead," I say "Get both/all!":

Wolf 7.62x39 is actually some of the better stuff I have shot. Some other brands are much much worse.

BTW Dick's sporting goods sells wolf .223 for $2.99 a box...compared to $2.50 for 7.62x39. So it isn't much more at all to go plinking with an ar15. But the 7.62x39 uppers are a good idea. It is big enough to hunt deer with and should give you better accuracy than an AK47.

BTW is that one AR an A4 upper? Where did you get those rear sights at?

Hopefully they are better quality than their sks mags. Buddy bought a few and they didn't work at all. Cheaper than dirt told us to destroy them and sent his money back.

Here's what I just heard from DPMS:

We do have these mags available at the current time. The are in the same configuration as the G-Tec mags. The MSRP is $49.95.
IF you have any questions feel free to contact us,

Thank you,

Subject: high cap 7.62x39 AR15 mags

I heard on some online firearm forums that DPMS will have high cap 7.62x39 mags for AR15. Is it true? Will they be G-Tech copies with metal followers? When will they be available and how much?

No, that's not good news.  Now that the AWB is done for, someone will be building 7.62 mags for the AR.  $50 each?

Yeah $50 is not good news. But I heard from people bought the DPMS G-Tech copies that their fit and finish are better than the USA Frankens. Real G-Tech ones were the best there were. They are 35-rounders with metal followers. I think that price will eventually come down to maybe $30?
