I received a surplus USAF reworked M16 upper in the mail today with a 20"FN pencil barrel stamped as shown in the picture. Upper is a Colt anodized to a black color. This is a barrel variation I had not observed before and thought it might be of interest. Apparently FNMI has furnished pencil barrels to the USAF for rebuilds. Any comments or knowledge of these barrels would be welcome.

So it's an A1 barrel, not A2?

I bought a 20in pencil barrel with the same markings as yours from cmmg about a year ago.

I bought it so I would have a light barrel for an A-1 upper project should the ban expire, and because a pencil weight FNMI barrel is not usual as far as I know.

Pencil barrel not A2. Appears near new condition. No other markings under the handguards or on the forward end of the barrel.
I would guess 1/12 as all the other USAF M16 barrels were of this twist.

They are 1/12. FN  had a contract for A1 replacement parts for NG and ANG units back in 1988/89. FN supplied bbls and barreled uppers.

Some of the uppers were A1 and some were C7 style.  Quite a few were supplied to Northern California Guard units.
