The military averages 10K per barrel (that's an average between barrels that run mostly semi, and some that run heavy full-auto). Bushmaster has noted 20K is not uncommon for semi-auto guns.

How many miles can you put on a car?
It really depends on HOW you shoot, just like with a car, it depends on how you drive and how well you maintain the car. More rapid fire means the barrel is exposed to high heat more often, and the hotter the barrel is, the less strength the steel has, and the less it resists wear from gas cutting and bullet friction. Folks who like to bump-fire shouldn't be surprised to have their barrels wear out much faster (i.e., lower round count) than those who fire aimed semi-auto shots. -Troy |

20k plus, i have 30 in one gun, i wore out the trigger, and had to replace it, but hey, not bad for the miles, a lot of bumping done in that gun

Noticably degraded accuracy, or bullets fragmenting in flight due to abrasions from a worn/pitted barrel throat.

I have a used chrome lined M16A1 barrel that I guaged when I installed it as near cherry.
The throat erosion guage has moved little if any in the past 9,000 rounds. 90% of my shooting is non rapid fire. I may peel off one mag per range visit tops. And I will let it cool off after doing that. I take two rifles and let one cool while I shoot the other. |

Given your shooting style, that's not surprising. However, the throat erosion gauge doesn't tell you how rough the throat is; just how much metal is totally gone. Just pointing that out.

I understand. I will know more when I clean her up this fall. I am going to completely strip it and norell moly-coat it. I will go over everything with a fine tooth comb.
