But, when the trigger goes "click click click", you must simulate the shot by making noises like "boom boom boom!" w/ your mouth.

If I'm not mistaken, dry firing the assembled AR: blaze away.
Dry firing the lower without the upper attached: bad. And yes... it's REQUIRED to make the "boom" sound with your mouth when you pull the trigger.

Even better.
Do this(with an unloaded rifle). Lie prone like you are shooting, aim at something in your house. Have someone balance a dime on the barrel just forward of the front sight base. Now, while the dime is balanced and you have a good sight picture, pull the trigger. If the dime falls off, you are jerking the trigger. Do this until you can pull the trigger consistently without the dime falling off. This can improve your accuracy. Just an old dry-fire Army marksmanship drill, but it works. |

Nobody told him WHY it is bad to dry fire the lower only.
When people know the WHY, it is a lot easier for them to remember. When assembled with the upper, the hammer strikes the steel firing pin which is contained in the steel bolt carrier. When dry firing the lower only, the hammer strikes the softer aluminum wall at the front of the receiver. This can damage the aluminum, tightening it around the bolt catch. It can also damage the bolt catch itself. When testing function on the lower only, insert a piece of wood, rubber, or plastic in front of the hammer. I use a strip of rubber cut from the top of an old rubber boot. |

you also have to make a fake recoil with the rifle, for the sake of realism and autheticity, along with the "boom boom" sound.
