I'm looking to build a SBR and some of the ones I've seen say M16 only. I was just woundering , whats the difference in an M16 and an AR upper? Whats the legal ramifications if I put one on an AR without the proper paper work?

They mean NFA only as in SBR MG......
But have a silly way of saying it......

So is it legit on a registered short barreled AR?

No paperwork plus an NFA iten is ten years, and a quarter million.

They say MG or Pistol only, but SBRs are the redheaded stepchild here, they just left them out.

CJ is correct though there is no precident for "SBR Constructive intent".
I want an AR Pistol but could be slammed with constructive intent of an SBR?
I don't think so. But you never know.

How do you tell the difference between a M16 upper and a AR15 upper?

When you read an ad in a catalog listing an "M16" upper, it just means that the barrel is less than 16". They call them that to save the trouble of saying "M16, SBR, and pistol upper."

There really is no difference between an AR-15 upper and an M16 upper, especially when most AR-15 uppers have sear reliefs cut in them anyway.
