I have a 24" DPMS Stainless Bull Barrel that I bought used about a year ago, and I am just getting around to building an upper for it. All is done, but I can’t find a free float tube to fit it other than what DPMS sells for it.
I appears that the diameter of the barrel where it steps up (it is even wider "heavier" under the hand guard / free float tube) makes it incompatable with some FF tubes. I have tried a YHM and a tube sold by Bushmaster with no luck. Can anyone tell me some models that will work - or do I have to buy one from DPMS? Thanks  |

Go to the hardware store and buy one of the little flapwheels that are made for Dremels. Put it in you hand drill and use it to open the hole in the barrel nut of your choice. Go slow and check it often because you don't want to make it too large. This is what I did on an Oly FIRSH and it has been fine.
Also, after you get the barrel nut to fit you'll probably find that your barrel wrench won't fit over the barrel. A 1" drum sander in your drill is perfect for widening the slot in the barrel wrench. |

The RRA tube is designed for their 1.050" varmint barrels. It should do the trick.

I had to do the same thing to get a FIRSH to fit over a J&T 24" Bull Barrel. The drum sander idea worked, but it was a real bitch to get the wrench and barrel nut opened up 1/8" or whatever it took for it to fit. I burned up my dremel and went through 3 or 4 grinding bits before finishing the job.

Know anybody with a lathe? That is a 5 min job to open it up - CLEANLY.

Even before I got my own, I still did work like this on lathes, I just got tired of begging, borrowing and stealing to get lathe time.

I have a DPMS Sweet 16 (1" Bull). I ordered it with the YHM 4 rail FF HG direct from DPMS. It doesn't look like it has been modified. Hope this helps.

At this point I am looking for a heavily vented model that has a tripod attachment stud. (I would like to be able to see the chrome barrel through the tube vent slots) Used would be great, as this is my first "Varmint" upper and I am not sure how much I will use it. Thanks! |
