Hey everybody, I am looking at selling my Bushmaster 20" and getting a 16" carbine. I have browsed a few posts on here and came up with this site http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/New_Bushmaster_Sunset_Rifles___Preban_features_.html

I see that they have two 16" models listed, and the only difference I can tell is that one has a "m4 profile barrel" and the other has a 16" heavy barrel.

why is one ~$10 more than the other, what is the difference?

There rifles are the same with the exception of barrels. I guess the 1/4 pound of weight you save by going to the M4 barrel is worth $10.

It really comes down to what you are going to use the rifle for. The weight doesn't make a difference unless you are a soldier on deployment. You have to weigh two options. Do you want a 14.5 inch barrel with the flash hider permanantly welded on to the barrel or do you want a 16" barrel with the flash hider not welded on. Personally I like the 16" barrel because it gives you 2.5 more inches of barrel(more accuracy). The contour in the M4 barrel is cool and all but when are you going to strap on the grenade launcher, you can't get grenades and civilians can't get live gas munitions so there goes all of your fun.

Sell your current upper and buy the upper you want! It's easier and you'll save money. I have an M4 profile 16" and just ordered a 16" HBAR.

1.5 inches... not 2.5

You must be at the beginning stages of Black Rifle Disease--where it is still possible to have more uppers than lowers.

The lighter barrel is more expensive because it takes extra machining steps to make that profile: barrel blanks arrive in the "Heavy Barrel" profile.

Heavy barrel M4s were designed to handle the heat generated by full-auto fire. That's it.

I think you should choose a weapon with a light barrel: it's easier to carry and quicker to get on target.

That said, all of this boils down to personal preference - there is no "right" way. Choose what you want and shoot the hell out of it.

Bushmaster Heavy Barrel Carbine--6.93 pounds
Bushmaster M4 Carbine--------------6.70 pounds

A difference of .23 pounds, with 1/4 pound equalling .25 pounds. So basically it is really a hair less than 1/4 pound.

What is a slightly used 20" hbar bbl upper assembly worth? Also, just to make sure I have my facts straight, I can use a "pre-ban" upper reveicer on my "post-ban" lower since the ban is no more, right?
