I shot in Arizona next to a guy with an 11 inch muzzle broken post sample DSA FAL. People think I am a pussy cause I tell them the concussion was almost blinding. Well, the flinches and headache were real. i don't think it was quite so bad for the guy behind the piece though

They're sweet, but the b*stard threw all kinds of crap in my face: I shoot left-handed! Thank goodness I brought a balaclava or I never would have made it through the 500 rounds of 9mm I bought to feed that little cutie. Back on topic. You want LOUD? Shoot a carbine indoors! That'll teach you if your hearing protection works or not!

I pulled up into the range last week in my camaro (a loud machine itself) with the windows up and the radio on and I hear BOOM BOOM BOOM...
I was like holy shit wonder what that is. There was a NICE m14. That thing was loud. I had ear plugs and muffs on and it still hurt my head. Gotta love that feeling that goes through your body when it shoots. My AK does it...just not as much. |

My 14.5inch barreled FAL with a muzzle brake usually turns some heads....indoors and out.

i have noticed my AR is alot louder then others not sure why.
i got a DPMS panther lite. I normally shoot white box winchester, 55gr FMJ. |

I had the pleasure to be shooting next to a guy with a .338 Lapua with muzzle brake a few weeks ago. Now that was loud!

A member of the WA State Patrol SWAT team let me run a few mags through his suppressed MP5. I had a funny smile on my face for two days. My wife was mad as hell because that's her dream gun and she wasn't there that day. |

Try a shorty 11.5" on full auto indoors. Even louder. A buddy of mine has a 10.5" shorty with a muzzle brake. Can't video tape shooting it - the concussion is so great that it makes the video tape skip off the heads. |

Loud huh? Try standing next to someone dumping a mag through an HK51!! (.308 machine gun with a 9" barrel). After that it will take a .50 BMG to make you flinch!

Guys, take it from an old fart of 52.
LOUD AIN'T COOL! Neither is tinnitis and 60% hearing loss in one ear. It sucks, plain and simple. My right ear has rung steadily for about 15 years now, day and night. And what little I DO hear out of it sounds like a cheap radio with a busted speaker. Combination of years of shooting when I was younger with no hearing protection, high speed motorcycle riding with open faced helmet and loud music. Most likely the shooting did the most damage. The hearing loss is slow enough it sneaks up on you. Yeah I know, the ringing in your ears from your carbine fades after a bit and you hear fine. The damage is cumulative. You're out at the range, banging away, and when you're through, after a bit the ringing stops. It was always that way for me. Until one day, after a session with a 20 inch A2, the ringing didn't stop after a bit. 14 years later I'm still waiting for it to stop. Wear plugs and muffs religously. Don't be a dumbass like I was. You'll pay for it, I guarantee.  Lonny |

Thanks for the info. I'm sorry you have to go through that. I'm glad I wear muffs religiously. Pain is sitting in a indoor range with only two lanes side by side - and a guy with his new 7mm rem mag. First shot was an instant headache on my side. |

From my experience, I have found the 14.5 bbl. with the perm. attached AK74 type muzzle break to be incredibly loud. Not very nice when shooting at covered ranges.

Argh, I'm only 22 and I have tenitis! Although I got it from a 10-hour long punk rock battle of the bands at a small indoor club in my high school days. Tenitis sucks! Although I can only hear the ringing when the room is quiet, it drives me nuts.

Well, I was shooting my 50 BMG off the hood of my Samurai, and I saw something go flying in my peripheral vision, I looked around and the windshied wiper nearest the muzzle was in the back seat, broken off. Im damn surprised I didnt break the glass.
Yes, I sold it, because even with muffs and plugs, it gave me a damn headache. The next one is going to be LOOOOOOONGER. And yes, the blast from a carbine is louder, hell, its 4" closer to your head, and yes, an AR pistol scares them away with the bang. I gotta submit a pic with my AR pistol and the 120 round chinese drum inserted, it just looks "Evil" screw the Mac 10's on the senate floor, a pistol 15" long firing a rifle cartridge, and on top of that 120 of them, now THAT is NO sporting purpose in a handgun. |

Shoot my HK-51 awhile and your carbine won't seem so loud. Full auto .308 out of an 8.5" barrel will get your attention.
 Shorter barrels are always louder. My Rem 788 bolt action .308 has an 18" barrel on it and it seems twice as loud as my .270 Win out of a 26" barrel. |

Paper target: Fap-fap. brass: Tinkle, tinkle. And one time, at rifle camp, we were on the semi-covered line next to this yahoo who was shooting a 7mm Mag with a muzzle break (Browning BOSS, IIRC). He and his buddy were cheering the noise. I wanted to set up to the immediate left of him ;) but we couldn't change positions. :( So we pulled out the 16" carbine with Austrian Hirtenberger.... And they left. ;) I'm supposed to use this thing for home defense? (Cups ear) "WHAT? OFFICER? WHAT? Just let me get my lawyer and some clean pants, I'll give a statement later, when I can hear you.":D |

I'm right there with you. I played drums in a thrash band for about 5 years in the early-mid 90s with my brother and some of our friends. My brother played guitar through a 400 watt bass head, and 8 12"s, and there were times he was so loud I could not hear myself playing, even though I was playing as hard as I physically could. When he cranked up, people would run for cover with their hands over their ears! You should have heard our sampled air-raid sirens, machine guns, helicopters and explosions indoors in the clubs! I am 37 now, and my ears are ringing still.
