My bro-in-law, who spent most of 2003 in Iraq (US Army Reserve), was allowed to mount an aftermarket mildot scope on his M16A2, kind of high and goofy looking, but he made due with it, and made it work very well from what I understand.  He also dug around all kinds of supply depots in Iraq and found an AN PVS-4 that he mounted on the same M16A2.  Once again, very goofy looking, but effective.
